    UPDATE 10/24/07:

I have just given the restaurant a final count of 20, noting that one person is still unconfirmed but will confirm later this afternoon.

    See you there!

I just spoke to Vishal, the owner's son, and he and his mother are excited to host this event. They will both be on hand to explain how the dishes are prepared.

The cost will be $20 per person, including beverages (but not including tax or gratuity).

    The vegetarian menu will include:

Chaat and bhel puri - Mumbai street vendor-style snacks

The owners are very flexible about the number of guests (the restaurant has a maximum capacity of 65). I would like to let them know the day before.

Please feel free to post questions/comments.

    Thank you.

I would certainly be interested. Later is better for me mid-week. Say 6:30-7:00 start. Coming all the way from west loop. Might be able to include spouse and child if schedule works out and group is amenable. (To child.) No umbrage taken if people prefer adult-only dinner.

I'm interested, and generally flexible about day-of-week. I don't think I could do much before 6:30 myself, and 7 is probably better.

    Hi,

I am interested, though around that time I am leaving for Mississippi. I am in unless my plans may dictate I have to beg off.

I'm interested. If it stays the 24th, I'll be a maybe. I've got to get on a plane the next morning for a conference. If I'm not writing until the last minute, I'll be at the dinner.

this sounds like an interesting meal. i'd like to come, but i would like to know the cost beforehand. if the owner is willing, i'd be in favor of us all eating the same thing. if you can arrange this, and get a fixed price and show us the menu, that would be wonderful. justjoan

    Joan,

This place is very cheap. Even if you ordered everything on the menu, you're not talking about a lot of money.

I was just there and had a feast for 4 people for around $10 per person (report forthcoming).

Steve is right: most meals, which come with rice, raita, and pickle are $5.50.

I will call Vishal tomorrow to make some preliminary arrangements (they're closed today).

I'm hoping we can dine family-style for a reasonable fixed price. I'll also
    ask about off-menu dishes.

    Joan,

While maybe this is event planning on your terms. I think you are demanding quite a lot of effort from someone who initiated an invitation and hopes like-minded people will attend. If you plan a get together, then please use your model. However why not let this lady do what she thinks is right.

    Regards.

i'm sorry if my post seemed out of line. fleurdesel's initial post asked if we wanted to order off the menu or have a family style meal. no one yet had indicated a preference. all i was doing was saying that i thought family style was a good idea. and what follows, if others agreed, is usually a discussion of the menu and price.

My mother's birthday is the next day, and--while my sister is in charge of the party--I may have things I have to do the night before....

I will give you a definite answer as soon as I can talk things over with my sister. Do you have a must-know-the-final-count date in mind? Thanks.

It's my pleasure. No, we cannot bring our own drinks.

Our hosts will be offering sweet and/or salty yogurt lassis, mango lassi, masala tea, coconut water, fresh lime soda, and other beverages. Note that drinks are included in the cost of the meal.

The fresh lime soda, which I order every time I visit, is delicious and a great complement to the food. I do not think anyone will be disappointed with the drinks available.

MrBarolo will only be +1 (Mrs. B.). Friend was unable to join us.

Is it permissable/polite/wise to BYO to the event, or are the drinks on the menu part of an integrated gesamtkunstwerk as it were, that we should not tamper with?

Mr. Barolo, your guest has been subtracted.

    BR, you have been added.

We cannot bring our own drinks, but I am assured that there will be a variety of beverages on offer (see upthread for description). I am guessing that the no-alcohol policy is of a piece with the restaurant's motto, "Healing Through Food."

I realize, however, that some might argue for the restorative powers of Scotch. Those so inclined can adjourn to Cary's, a nearby bar...

Given the usual parking situation on Devon, would any attendee who is coming from/through Evanston be willing to car-pool--ie, provide a ride to and from Uru-Swati? I would be happy to contribute toward gas/parking if needed....

Please PM me for further details. Thanks!

I'm happy to give a ride to anyone coming from/going to Evanston. I could take up to three people. PM me and let me know where to pick you up. I'm also happy to give folks a ride home. Just FYI: I will stay until the end of dinner, but I can't dawdle too much since I have to get on a plane the next morning.
