SEPTEMBER 28th, Friday, meet at 6:30-7PM. Seating capacity is limite to 27-28 people, so first come first serve - please make a RESERVATION here.

I spoke with the owner and they would like some heads up as to when I would plan to bring in a group of people, and finally get some PHOTOS of the wonderful food, plus because you're special people they are going to prepare some specialty items for our meal (one of them is called an upside-down).

    Shish-ka-bob shack is located at:

    8542 S. Cicero Ave.
    Burbank, IL. 60459
    708-423-0057

They specialize in kabobs (done on a grill with charcoals) and beef schwahrma (hand cut, on the spit). Everything is fresh, and the prices are LOW. I also wondered recently why their falafel is green inside, and a little spicy: Chick peas, garlic, parsley (or was it basil?!) and jalapeno! They are really fantastic!

So who is up for some GREAT middle eastern food. My only warning is don't expect a nice decorative place. It resembles a fast-food Schwahrma place that I've seen in Windsor Ontario where people are lined up late at night for the stuff, and the place is packed inside (but this particular one has no people but there is NOTHING like it on the southside and people are missing out). It's all about the FOOD there - other than that it's your basic tables, chairs, paper napkins....right to the point. Come dressed casual/comfortable (shorts or whatever you want) and make it like home. We set up a table outside the other day and we were drinking sage tea with the owner and his friend and just talking for a long time. As it gets late they sometimes bring out the hookah, which I haven't tried yet. Great turkish coffee too....

Looking forward to having just a couple of people or a large group. Whoever comes will not be disappointed and I really believe you will be back for more (to the red head girl I met at xni pec... I used to go to chucks all the time... now I go here all the time, it's hard to drive past it and NOT stop in for something!)

    Mike

    Mike,

This sounds good. You need to just pick a day and time and let those who can make it sign up. Othewise, this event will never happen, what with people's busy schedules and all.

All right, Mike. I'm in. I'm the gal you met at Xni-Pec. And I'm always up for something close to my work.

I'll probably bring my brother-in-law. Mr. GF has a class that night, so it'll just be two of us. Sounds gooooo-d.

We aren't going to be able to make it, but we visited the shack again last night and had another very good meal. Nothing really to add to previous reports, just that it's consistently good.

Bad news for the southside - good news for you north siders:

This great place is going to close its doors. They just have NO business, located in a strip mall on Cicero Ave. no one seems to give a dang about Middle Eastern food and people in the neighborhood won't try it or are afraid to come in. There were times people come in, look at the menu, and walk out. It's so sad, like everyone here expects tacos and gyros :-(.

BUT - our get together is still on and they are planning a special meal just for us.

The good news is they are going to relocate to the NORTH SIDE, I will let you know the new location, in the next 2-3 months.

So far sdritz and her group, and my friends.. no one else from LTH is stepping up. I will need the total head count by 9-25-07 so they know how much food to prep for us.

Will they still be open to public tonight? I can call and find out, sure. I'm picking up the s/o from midway tonite, and am thinking about a stop for some to-go dinner. Mid Eastern really sounds like a good plan for that.
Now to find a thread for food recs from here ...

If we do stop in, I'll be the large football player looking guy wearing glasses, and looking like I should be asleep. (I'll probably be just getting out of the gym after taking a long steam / and spa tub soak after a workout.)

yes it's open to the public. We only have 10 people, probably the most they have ever had at one time.

Last night's dinner at Shish-ka-bob Shack was delicious. Many thanks to UniAddict for setting this up.

Dinner started with a variety of appetizers on the table, hummous, baba ganouj, pickled turnips and fresh pita bread. For one of UniAddict's friends at the table, this was her first introduction to middle eastern food and it was obvious she was enjoying it very much.

We had lentil soup, very nicely flavored, followed by a salad of chopped tomatoes, cucumber, lemon, olive oil and fresh herbs. It was clear that the salad had not been sitting around all day and was prepared for us while we were enjoying the soup.

Everyone ordered the combination plate, although some opted to share it. For under $10, it was a terrific bargain -- chunks of grilled beef and chicken, kifta kabob and schwarma with a mountain of rice. There were cups of a yogurt based sauce and a green spicy sauce on the table for people to season their meals with as they chose. We followed our meal with some turkish coffee.

Unfortunately, nobody brought a camera to our repast and there are no pictures. I would have taken a photo of my leftovers, but I did not think it would do them justice.

As UniAddict noted in a post above, this restaurant is moving north. While they said it would be at the end of the month, I think they meant October rather than September.

Both the meal and the company were terrific. We are going to try and hit this place again in a couple of weeks.

I was on my way there after picking up the S/O at Midway right around 6:45 last Fri. Traffic on Cicero was backed up horribly just past the Cell Phone lot, and looked like it was at a standstill for about 1/2 mile. We pulled U-turn and tried the new Mex place closer to the house. I will still get there before they move to try it. Probably this Fri or Sat.
Baba Ganouj is always a "must" for us.
Sounds like we'll also get the combination plate, and a side of the "spicy green sauce" if it is not included.
Was the salad you described a version of tabouleh? (I don't have a menu)
    Any other recs?
I know this is the "events" forum, but, well, It's here, and the thread will die off on it's own shortly.

My understanding is that the restaurant is already closed, and that the meal on the 28th was a special private event.

edit: nevermind, see UniAddict's post below.

I took my kids and my mom there on the 30th. The food was still fabulous! My 4 yr old even liked it! :D And yes, the salad is a version of tabouleh, but they call it Jerusalem salad.
They said they would be moving in about 6 weeks.
PS. Thanks to Mike for hosting this- and you knew I had a camera with me!
