For those not familiar with the internal cycles of sawm (which is practiced differently by different communities and threads of Islam), can you clarify if this event is occurring three hours after the midnight between Friday and Saturday (so actually on the calendar day Saturday) or 3 AM after Saturday night (so actually on the calendar day Sunday?)

    For your clarification:

I'm very interested, and I've never had saher breakfast, but I've got to run in a race on Saturday morning. Past experience*s* have taught me that it's best I show some restraint with the eating the night before. I hope you get a good group together.

    Cathy,

In light of your previous post, will the breakfast at Hyderabad House be the same food on their evening menu but served at 3:00 a.m. or are there special dishes that are served in a Saher Breakfast?

    Hi,

Jygach was more engaged on what the buffet would offer. I did hear snippets like curry and roti. I have asked her to clarify.

    Thanks!

In my brief conversation with the person from Hyderabad House, it appeared that they offered a wide variety of foods, but nothing that was made specifically for Ramadan. To verify my information I called Hyderabad House and they confirmed that their Saher buffet is similar to their regular buffet. Her comment, loosely translated, was "What more could you possibly want?" When I suggested that there were some of us seeking foods specific to the season, she retorted that "My fast would be better if I did not overindulge." Advice that any LTHer would, ofcourse, ignore :)

Hope this helps. I should add that regardless of the food, there was something distinctive about consuming breakfast or, more accurately, three breakfasts at such an early hour with fellow LTHers last weekend.

I was thinking about attending the breakfast, but after doing a little research on the suhur (the same as saher, or different?) I've decided to sleep-in instead. If I typically ate an early breakfast (or much of a breakfast, for that matter), or if there was something (more) culturally significant about the specific day or the food being served, I'd likely have joined you. I'll be thinking of all of you, though - as I toss and turn in the night!

The Boston Globe had a good article about suhur and the food some people prepare/eat for the breakfast:

Aljabri enjoys preparing suhur, a special pre-dawn breakfast consumed by many Muslims who are observing the Islamic month of Ramadan, when their faith prescribes that they fast during daylight hours. The ninth month on the Muslim lunar calendar, Ramadan takes place this year between Sept. 13 and Oct. 12, and occurs about 10 days earlier every year. While the sunset meal, or iftar, with which Muslims end their daily fasts, is the better known of the two meals, suhur also plays an important practical and spiritual role. Although many Muslim immigrants and their children maintain customs from their countries of origin, life in America is also shaping how they ob serve suhur and what it has come to mean.

    Bill,

I'm sorry it didn't meet your standards. I like to get a sense of what it is like, which I cannot do from bed. Just by trying to participate in these practices outside of my cultural scope, I learned a lot from some of the people replying with their experiences.

I guess I subscribe to the school: If you don't go, then you will never know.

So this time is still accurate? Not promising anything, but if I have another sleepless night.... Just curious--how is the parking on Devon at 3:00 am?

For those who might make the wild impulse move to join. I will be a few minutes late because I am picking up people along the way.

There is a wee little chance that I may join in. If so, I'll see you all there. I don't know whether my laziness or my undying desire to eat will triumph.

    Hi,

While a more expanded report will follow sometime soon, here is a quick outline of my morning:

    2 AM: wake up call

    - Breakfast at Hyderabad House with three LTH friends
    - Drop off at Midway Airport with a prior tour of ARcher Ave.
    - On the way to Huck Finn was detoured to Bridgeport Bakery for bakery buns and pastries. Never did make it to Huck Finn.
    - Stopped at Don Pedro's for brain tacos with a sidetour of an intensely hot and busy kitchen.
    - Brief visit to a taco production line.

    7:30 AM: Back in bed.

Who says we leave any stone unturned?

    Regards,
    Cathy2
