We are going to see Jersey Boys in December, does anyone have any great restaurant tips in the LaSalle Theater area?

Grill Room is right across the street. I've never had a bad meal there, and had quite a tasty steak that was topped with mushrooms.

I also like Nick's Fishmarket up in the bar area for flatbreads and salads if you want something light and a couple of cocktails.

Trattoria No. 10 is an excellent suggestion, but just to throw two other suggestions out there for you:
    Catch 35
    35 W. Wacker
    312-346-3500
(probably my first choice for dinner in that area of the loop, it's essentially a seafood place as the name indicates, and I especially like the seared yellow fin tuna)

    Atwood Cafe
    1 W. Washington
    312-368-1900
(I've actually only been for lunch, but I've enjoyed most of the meals I've had there -- especially the chicken pot pie -- and I think its atmosphere and State Street location would fit the night out in the Loop vibe)

I'm going to disagree with nicinchic on the The Grillroom. It's very tempting, since it's directly across the street from the theater, but the one meal I had there recently was overpriced and underwhelming. I was also really turned off by our waiter, who was very pretentiously pushing the most expensive cuts of meat (the $44 "Kansas City Strip" and the $46 "Cowboy Ribeye," to be precise). Chicago has so many much better steak houses. Any of the other recommendations would be better even if you have to walk a block or two or three between dinner and the theater.

In addition to those previously mentioned, I'll add Rhapsody at 65 E. Adams.

I agree with Ann, Rhapsody is very good. My experience at the Grill Room is different, I've been there at least five times, and never experienced what she did. I'm no expert on steak, but I do know when I get a bad one, and I know that the prices are no different than any other steakhouse in town. Let's not bring up the great steak deabate on this thread.

There is a new Rosebud Steakhouse called Roebud Prime at the corner of Dearborn and Madison. I have had one lunch there and had a very nice piece of seared sushi grade ahi and a beefsteak tomato and onion salad. Very nice lunch. I have included a menu link below.

I know people on this board have an overall dislike of LEYE restaurants, but I find Petterinos which is at the corner of Randolph and Dearborn to be an excelllent place for lunch and the occasional dinner. I enjoy the Kup and the Fritzel Salad as well as the chicken hash.

Catch 35 is also pretty good

Thanks to all, now I have some decisions to make it sounds like they are very nice restaurants. I have tried Trattoria and enjoyed it very much.

This restuarant (owned by the Rosebud Corporation) isn't really new, just the name is new The place has been there for at least 5 years. They just can't find seem to get a name to fit. It used be La Rosetta, then Rosebud Theater District, now Rosebud Steakhouse.

I enjoy this restaurant, what ever they call it very much.

I love the new Rosebud Prime. I've had lunch there (3 blocks from my office) a dozen times, and dinner, 4 times. The menu is very similar to the original Rosebud Steakhouse on Walton, but with several new and interesting items. Something I've never either seen, nor even heard of, a Kobe beef hot dog, is available. At $16, it sounds a bit steep. But, it's huge, and served in its poppyseed bun, cut into fourths. It makes a great appetizer for four, a side dish for two, or filling meal for one. Properly garlicky, just the right snap to the skin, and served with the usual toppings on the side. If nothing else, you can be among the few to have ever partaken of a Chicago style Kobe beef hot dog (oxymoron, though that may be).

I haven't been to Trattoria No. 10 recently, but they used to have a great happy hour buffet that was free with a drink purchase. Has anyone had it recently, and can you still make it into a good pre-theater meal? We're heading to see Wicked tomorrow night, and it was the first idea that popped into my mind.

I've done the buffet a few times over the last 5 years or so but not very recently. I don't recall it ever being free (just under $10 with a 2 drink minimum is what I remember). According to their website, it's now $12 with a $6 drink minimum (weekdays 5-7:30). The food isn't spectacular but I think it's a good pre-theater option if you're in the mood for a light meal.

I frequently eat at Petterinos for lunch. It is one block from my office, they have a nice bowl of soup and the Kup salad is very good too. I have also been know to dine on the chicken hash with shired eggs which is very good. Those dishes are the usual extent of my lunch time repertoire. When in the mood for soup and salad, i like the place.

That having been said we had a lousy experience at Petterinos two weeks ago before we saw Jersey Boys (BTW Jersey Boys is very very good)

5:30 res for 8 people before a 7:30 show should have been plenty of time for dinner in a restaurant used to the pre-theater rush. The restaurant was a disaster, mis-timings, forgetting individual dishes and other uneven service issues ruined a completely average meal. All of the fish, miso cod, whitefish, etc was totally overcooked and the roasted chicken was terribly dry. Next time ill stick with soup and salad as i do at lunch and go to Catch 35 for dinner. On top of all of this we barely made it for the curtain. If you are thinking petterinos pre-show i suggest thinking again

Thanks Rene. I couldn't find those details on the website, so I'm glad to know it's still on. And even at $18 pp for a drink and dinner, it's still a great deal!
