A
post from a while back inspired me to dig up some photos I had taken a few trips ago and post about one of my favorite places to eat in Baton Rouge, George's.
George's is a neighborhood bar that oozes atmosphere and good smells (even more so these days considering that Baton Rouge has enacted a smoking ban -- if it blows your mind that you can't smoke inside in a city that still has drive through daiquiri stands, take a number). There are several locations, but the only one I can vouch for is the one under the I-10 overpass off of Perkins Road. It has a fairly standard bar and grill type menu of burgers, chicken sandwiches and the like, but the real stars in my mind are the po boys and, usually, the daily specials.
If you're ever passing through, sidle up to the bar, order a drink to tide you over while you wait, fill out your own ticket and have a nice meal. Great place to watch an LSU football game when they're on the road; you'll have the place to yourself on a home date.

Here's what the NYT had to say in a "36 Hours in Baton Rouge"-type article:
New York Times wrote:L.S.U. comes by its party school reputation honestly, which means that Baton Rouge depends heavily on good bar food. Head out to George's Restaurant (2943 Perkins Road, 225-343-2363), a low-slung brick building in the shadow of a highway overpass, and get ready for a night of outstanding Louisiana barroom specialties. Start off with a cup of rich chicken and sausage gumbo ($3.95), chunky with smoked sausage and soothing on a brisk autumn night. Other portions are anything but controlled: a platter of thin-cut fried catfish filets ($7.75) could easily feed two; the Doug's Special ($8.95) — a hamburger steak topped with gravy, ham, cheese, grilled onions and bacon — weighs in at more than a pound and is a savory, glorious mess for the fearless carnivore.
