When the Great Gods of Chow gaze down upon Manny’s (1141 S. Jefferson), they see the sacred spot where, lo so many years before, the legendary around-the-clock Chow-a-Thon began, and they see, too, the spot that will become even more incredibly damn sacred when it hosts our third annual holiday party, the 2007 LTH ChanuKwanzaChristadan Festivus.

On December 15, at 6:00 PM, we will, as in years past, gather together to raise our voices in praise and our mouths to slurp seemingly endless platters of exquisite grub. Manny’s will set forth the full and limitless line of time-honored comestibles: corned beef, pastrami, baked salmon, skirt steak, short ribs, knish, and sides – everything you can eat from the lunch and dinner menus – plus all the beer, wine and other beverages you can quaff. And free wi-fi. They’re even throwing in an LTH cake! Does this not rule?!

For more about Manny’s -- an LTH-recognized Great Neighborhood Restaurant -- go here: http://www.mannysdeli.com/ or to one of many LTH love poems to this remarkable establishment:

Price is $50. You can pay one of two ways:

    • Pay with a credit card at Brown Paper Tickets: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/23186
    • Make a check out to David Hammond and send it to me at 205 S. Scoville, Oak Park, IL, 60302

Want a spot? Please sign up now (if possible, please indicate screen name on payments).

Raffle will take place after dinner; bring a raffle gift (an approximately $10 value), and get a ticket to win a prize. If you don’t want to be in the raffle, that is totally cool – it’s all voluntary – you can still watch (from a respectful distance). To give you an idea of what you might bring, here’s a very partial list of some of the gifts from last year:

    • Home-cured bacon from MikeG
    • Machine that turns a hot dog into an octopus from Josephine
    • Local preserves and sorghum from Vital Information
    • Chocolate sour-cream bundt from Eat Chicago and Petit Pois
    • Some amazing BBQ device from stevez
    • Leaf lard from Bruce
    • Chili oil and BBQ rub from GWiv

We are fortunate to have secured the musical services of the Northside Southpaws, purveyors of “Archaic country and obsolete ragtime, performed on left-handed resonator instruments.”
    .
    Image

The boys – who appear regularly at Friday night hoe-downs at Honky Tonk BBQ in Pilsen -- will be playing two sets and joining us for dinner. Yee-ha!!

Vital Information will be collecting for the Oak Park Food Pantry; those who would like to do so are encouraged to bring items such as rice, cereal, and canned meat,

If you plan to come, please post to this thread so people know you’re coming; if you want to announce the raffle item you're bringing, that'd be cool, too (though by no means required); then pay at Brown Paper Tickets or send a check.

    Hope to see you there.

Note: We’ll be wrapping up at 9:30PM, but we can of course retire – as is our tradition -- to the nearby Skylark (2149 S Halsted St), where we can await the dawn and the Maxwell Street Market, which opens a mere 9.5 hours hence.

I shall be pleased to attend.

[To be edited later, once I decide upon a raffle item.]

Update: It will be variations on a theme of "lavender" from San Francisco's Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market--you might remember it as the one Mr. Slow Food allegedly dissed earlier this year as being composed of effete California yuppie foo-foo slackers. Well these lavender lovelies came from that same den of iniquities--oh, boy!

Are we posting the raffle prizes we'll be bringing? I already know what I'm gonna bring and my lovely wife also has a good idea but I didn't know if it should be a surprise or if a list of potential goodies will serve as incentive to get people to sign up.

vvv Well then, I will be offering up a 750ml bottle of my homebrewed mead as a raffle prize.

i'm wondering if one of the organizers of the holiday party could, or already has, asked manny's to open up the lot for self-parkers during our party, since their evening policy now seems to be only valet parking. with 50 plus people arriving around the same time, it would be much easier to park our own cars. just asking......
