Finally WTTW pledge night has a food oriented program. Foods of Chicago will be broadcast on:

    - Tuesday November 27 6:30-10
    - Monday December 3rd 6:30-10
    - December 9th 5-10:45 PM

I think this would be a nice public service project for us with some highlighting of LTHforum.

Presently, WTTW's volunteer coordinator is asking groups to priortize which dates they can send volunteers. If we have enough people who could volunteer on each of these dates, then perhaps we can be a presence at each Foods of Chicago drive. Your feedback today will provide information to discuss our participation with the volunteer coordinator on Monday.

Please respond which date(s) you can help out either by responding below, PM or e-mail.

    Hi Cathy--

Thanks for getting volunteers together for us! Just to be clear: the show itself airs at 7:30 and again at 10:00. Would it be possible to put those times on the calendar just so that it's clear when people will be able to watch from home?

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Hi,

I will do what I can to make it clear. Is that the schedule for each of the three days it airs? The schedule above is related to the volunteer phone bank people.

    Cathy,

Working the phones at WTTW was quite interesting, as volunteers we were afforded a behind the scenes look at how TV is made, met the very personable Geoffery Baer and even had a chance to chat with producer Dan Protess.

The phones were fairly busy, the evening went by quickly and I understand WTTW raised $35,000 over the course of the evening.

An interesting and rewarding experience, thanks go to Cathy for bringing this to the boards attention.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

We caught you on tv last night, Gary. You, Stevez and Josephine were sitting in a great spot. Even though LTHForum was not listed as one of the volunteer groups, they did mention the volunteers on air.

The phones looked very busy and I really enjoyed what I managed to see of the show. I'm hoping for future broadcasts they will air it earlier as we get up so early, we rarely make it past nine on a week night. Really.

Great show - just bought the DVD for some friends who love food and are no longer in Chicago - not sure if it will amuse or torment them, but it is a gift they will remember.

Dobra did a nice job, as did so many others I have had the pleasure to meet, or enjoy their food. I do have one tiny nit to pick - I do not believe the phrase "corned" as it applies to corned beef has anything to do with maize as was stated on the show. If I recall correctly, and I am sure the well-informed linguists will either confirm or correct me here - it originated in Europe before they had maize there and thus must have be of a different origin.

Sorry I was not able to join in as it turned out, but my heart was with you all. Well done.

Wikipedia wrote:The "corn" in "corned beef" refers to the "corn" or grains of coarse salts used to cure it. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the usage of "corn," meaning "small hard particle, a grain, as of sand or salt," to 888, and the term "corned beef" to 1621.[1] The term "corned beef" can denote different styles of brine-cured beef, depending on the region. Some, like American-style corned beef, are highly seasoned and often considered delicatessen fare. In Britain, corned beef is usually bought at the delicatessen, or may be in chilled packs or can be found in trapezoid cans, imported from South America.

Thanks, Tom, I guess that means I was right and wrong. The guy on the show said it was called corned because the grains of salt looked like corn. Strictly correct, but it does give the wrong impression since the usage of corn that applies is very much archaic.

I suppose a corn on one's foot also has the same derivation. Makes me think it was a pretty common term back in the 16th and 17th centuries at least.

    But I digress.

    C2,

Crrush's red hair, and yes it is gorgeous, was easy to spot as were you sporting your LTHForum shirt. You both looked terrific on tv and the phones seemed quite busy.

It was also nice that, once again, Geoffrey Baer made a point of mentioning LTHForum.com.

    Enjoy,

    Hi,

ccrush and I were the only non Kiwanis people answering the phones. At the ice cream break, a lady came up to ccrush to advise a caller wanted to know the name of the red haired lady. I wore my LTHforum bowling shirt, which at least made me somewhat distinctive in the sea of Kiwanis yellow shirts. However ccrush now has her own Kiwanis yellow shirt. They just couldn't imagine there was anybody there who was not Kiwanis.

I did pass on a LTHforum card to the volunteer coordinator who brought to Jeffery. Immediately upon receipt, he shouted out to the audience inquiring who were the LThforum people. We waved and he promised to mention us. We were not on the volunteer marquee because you need at least 10 people. However a mention by Jeffery is good enough, especially since we were a resource to them. Bruce Kraig had pointed them to our website early on. The circle of friends just keeps on growing.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Cathy, thanks so much for suggesting we volunteer at WTTW. It was a truly enjoyable evening, especially with the camaraderie of GWiv and stevez. And Jeffrey Baer and Dan Protess were gracious and quite interested in talking about LTH with us. Biggest surprise of the evening: a caller who wanted to chat about Ramova Grill, her favorite restaurant. (She didn't know about the mother-in-law, alas, but she tipped me off to the burgers.)

I will definitely volunteer there again.
