I'd love to pick up one of the seats that has been recently vacated, especially if there's a chance of chiles en nogada.

I spoke with Carlos about the menu for Sunday.
    Here are the highlights:

    Mole Sampler with Tortillas
    Tlacoyos
Quesadillas made with esposote(sp?) leaves and (I forget)
    Ostrich en Mole Teloloapense
Borrego (lamb chops) en Mole Negro
    Chiles en Nogada !!!

    Various sides and dessert

I hope everybody is happy with Carlos' choices. I know I am.
The cost should be around $30 pp. including gratutity.
    BYOB

See you all on Sunday at 5:30pm

    Dave,

If not for a previous commitment, I'd be on this like a cheap suit on a low-rent bodyguard.

    Enjoy,

If there is room and it isn't too inconvenient for you, I'd like to add my name to the list. I know it is last minute so I'll also understand if it won't work out.

Unfortunately, I have given Carlos a final tally, but I will double-check with everybody to see if there might be any more cancellations. I will get a total count tomorrow.

BTW I probably underestimated the total cost by a bit. For one thing, I forgot sales tax. It may be more like $35 pp when all is said and done.

I wonder if Carlos would be able to print his menu up so one of you lovely wordsmiths could post about it on the forum!

Thank you so much for setting this up. We are really looking forward to it.

It looks like we will have room for both Laura and Jon (mejiro), so if you guys want to attend please send me a message with the "PM" button below.

Everybody, please remember that the time changes tonight. Don't show up an hour late by mistake. I know it always messes me up for a couple of days.

sorry to mess with your head, dave. but, after consulting with 2 friends to confirm the facts, i'm here to say that people risk being ONE HOUR EARLY, not late, to sol de mexico if they forget to move their clocks back, ie; we gain an extra hour to sleep. justjoan

 I guess you're right, the clocks go back. Actually, I first wrote "don't show up early", then I second guessed myself. I told you it gets me all messed up. I guess I'm the one who should worry.

i was kicking myself for being an idiot last sunday when not once, but twice, (at 8pm and again at 2am) i tried to record the brilliant masterpiece theater show, 'the amazing mrs. pritchard', and ended up recording something else. i even called WTTW to see if they changed the schedule. i realized today that my old VCR had kicked in with the time change a week early. last year was the first year we moved the time change a week later. the time change seriously messes with my head twice a year. 2 friends from the suburbs are picking me up in the morning for breakfast (at cj's eatery) and then a trip to see the 40 ft. long crocheted coral reef at the cultural center and we just spent 20 minutes arguing in a friendly fashion about the time change before we could all agree on which way to set our clocks. what a pain in the neck!

With make's cancellation, my favorite +1 could join us to keep numbers consistent if the spot has not been snatched. The Chicago Humanities Festival event ends earlier than she anticipated. Please count me for two again (or PM me if this is an issue, no problem).

Fantastic dinner at SdM tonight. Carlos and family really outdid themselves. Ohhhhh those moles! And the lamb and ostrich were both cooked to perfection.

As for the great coconut tart to finish the meal, in the shopping & cooking section of this site, I've linked to Rick Bayless' recipe for the coconut tart. Based upon the version I had at Frontera some time back, I'm guessing the recipes are very similar if not identical.

Thanks so much Dave for setting up this evening. It was a great evening of fantastic food and wonderful LTH people. It was also such a pleasure to see how much the GNR award meant to Carlos and his staff, and they have certainly earned it -- easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in Chicago.

I'll post other pix later, but the most important - Dave gives Carlos his GNR award.

Bravo on the successful nomination and great presentation event, Dave. To my palate, that was a perfect selection of items from the menu, from a taste of each savory mole with fresh tortillas, to crunchy deep-fried, to strong earthy nut and vegetable flavors (chile en nogada and salad), well-prepared meats (ostrich! I looked it up: avestruz), and not-too-sweet dessert. I'm sorry we couldn't stay for the actual certificate awarding - these days, 2.5 hours doesn't even scratch the surface of a good LTH event! We'll allow for more catchup time in the future.
