A few days ago Pigmon and I joined the ladies-who-lunch crowd at L S Ayres Tea Room. The Ayres department store was an Indianapolis institution until it closed in 1990. Its famous clock remains at the corner of Meridian & Washington but the much-loved Tea Room is now in the Indiana State Museum.

We both started with Chicken Velvet Soup.

Pigmon had the Chicken Pot Pie . . .

. . . and I had the Ham Loaf with Mustard Sauce.

    It was divine.

I notice you forgot to wear your white gloves. That requirement is why I never went to Ayres' Tea Room growing up (breakfast with Santa in the toy department was as close as I got to that), but now that they've apparently modified the Tea Room's dress code after the move to the State Museum, I may give it a try (plus that chicken velvet soup does look rather divine).

    What, no dessert?

I would be interested to know what they offered. Generally, there is some house specialty dessert in tea rooms. That is why we ladies order chicken salads and other light fare for the main course-- so we can rationalize the indulgence in sweets, something we must, of course, vocalize at each occasion. "Oh, I really shouldn't but. . ." Not to preface one's order in this fashion would just be scandalous, you see.
Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.
    T. S. Eliot: Ah, but you're not a poet.

Along those appearance of "healthy eating" lines; gotta love the wan steamed veggies accompanying every loaf-y, creamed morsel.

Tho' those pics remind me that I've been intending to track down this Indiana favorite, chicken velvet soup.

...izzit just cream o' chicken by any other non-Midwestern name?

Ham loaf is just meatloaf, except with ground ham instead of beef. When I was in college, I'd occasionally make one from the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook with ground ham and ground pork. It had a wonderful brown sugar and mustard glaze.

Later in college, I became a vegetarian, but for several years the ham loaf is what I'd think about when I thought about eating meat. Now, it's been more than 15 years, and while I've returned to eating fish and shellfish, my only exception to not eating meat was up the road from Ayers in Ft. Wayne at Powers.
