Does anybody know where to buy or have a recipe for that thick creamy garlic salad dressing that most pizza places & diners serve?

I've found through tinkering that the following is delicious:

    1 cup mayo
1 tbsp parsley or chives(fresh and chopped)
    1 tbsp vinegar(white or cider)
1-2 cloves garlic(depending how strong you like it) Freshly minced garlic only or it will not be the same.
1 tbsp of milk or cream(thins out the mayo a bit.)
1 tbsp spicy, brown mustard or 1 tsp ground mustard
    1 tsp sugar
Salt and freshly cracked pepper (to taste)

Mix all the ingredients and you’ll end up with just over a cup. To get your desired thickness you may have to play around with the ratio of mayo to milk. It's not very healthy but it's great on a salad or as a dip.

My personal recipe is rather different, and it's modeled after Dave's Italian Kitchen's version:

1/2 Cup Sour Cream, or about 3 parts sour cream to 1 part mayo
3 or more cloves garlic, grated on a microplane
1 tsp lemon juice and some grated rind
    large pinch salt
    large pinch white pepper
Thin to desired consistency with buttermilk

Mix together and let sit for at least an hour before serving.

Thanks! They both sound wonderful, I'll have to try them.

I was kind of hoping somebody out there would read this & tell me the name of the vendor that supplies that dressing...it has to be the same stuff at all those restaurants...I've often thought about just calling and inquiring, but not sure if they would tell me!

Sysco or GFS more than likely are the suppliers.

GFS Marketplace carries a creamy garlic salad dressing. The only problem with it is that you have to buy a gallon jug in most cases - and that is a LOT.

Stopped by Maries for a pizza the other day and had a salad w/creamy garlic. Bought some dressing to take home. Waitress said they buy the dressing from a vendor, Bon Sherry, Bon Sheri....

It's the creamy garlic many restaurants in Chicago use, where can I buy it??

    Thanks!!

Happy to see this thread already existed....been jonesing for an old-fashioned 60s-70s coffee shop type garlic dressing! Had some at Italian Kitchen in Deerfield a while ago, can't wait to try the recipes above.

SPEAKING of salad dressings, anyone ever recreate the anchovy/sour cream version they make at Carson's the oft-LTH-maligned? We lve that dressing and I've never seen a bottled brand nor a recipe.

Yumm. You do not see this creamy garlic recipe around much anymore but I recall it was quite popular some years ago. Either recipe is a good one to try although my guess is that if I made it, I would make it with part mayo and part sour cream. I think both brings something to the recipe. Greek yogurt would be a good substitute for sour cream and would be more health conscious and impart a tang.

Dressings of the Past can be evocative. I moped around, missing Kraft French [the original one] until I moved to Montréal and discovered that it still existed. Last season at Penzy's I discovered that they have the spice/herb mixture for Green Goddess, of all things--also one of the missed and mourned.

Both those Creamy Garlic recipes look to be worth a try. Tnx folks!

Tonelli's in Northbrook used to make a homemade version that was light green and SO Delicious!
I really wish I had THAT recipe!

and I also LOVE the Carson's Anchovy-house dressing!

    Hi,

There was an awful Greek diner whose only redeeming quality was their creamy garlic dressing.

Last week I saw Sarah Moulton make a creamy garlic dressing that really peaked my interest. The ingredient list is:

Creamy Garlic Dressing Two Ways: Rich and Slim
    Makes about 2/3 cup
    2 T sherry vinegar
    2t Dijon mustard
    1/4 t kosher salt
1/8 t freshly ground black pepper
    1 garlic clove
    1/4 c heavy cream or plain low-fat or full-fat yogurt Greek-style
    yogurt
1/4 c extra virgin olive oil

Method is covered by the link above.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I recall Corkette Creamy Garlic Dressing sold just until a few years ago at Sunset foods. A Chicago original, memorable flavor, creamy and smooth. ummmmmmmmm.
