Allow me to submit Triple XXX Drive In in West Lafayette, IN, Indiana's oldest drive in. Although it started out as strictly a root beer stand, it has morphed into more of a full service diner/drive-in. They still serve the original Triple XXX Root Beer, though. I found it not all that great, but thought I would post here in the name of completeness.

The November issue of Saveur has an interesting article on root beer, including a recipe for making a gallon at home.

Sprecher's is awesome. I love their cream soda too.


I keep forgeting to mention The Root Beer Stand in Oglesby IL, near Starved Rock and worthy of a try if day tripping around there. Good double burger shown here.

I fortunately live only 20 mins from The Rootbeer Stand. I like their burgers, and their pork tenderloin sandwich.

Ive said it before and Il say it again. Ive been to superdog and frosted mug. The best root beer is at Blue Top drive in on indianapolis blvd. in Highland Indiana. They make an excellent burger as well. They have carhops too. In the summer months you can find old cars there. Built in 1964.Currently the place is for sale , so go while you can.

This isn't a drive in, but a basic all-inclusive diner, and they have the best root-beer ever:

Yeah, rub BBQ has some spectacularly good root beer.

Surprised not to see Ace Drive-In in Joliet listed. They have car-side service and picnic tables. The food is decent and I like the root beer, but I'm no connoisseur.

There are several mentions of Superdawg in this thread. I was there last weekend, I believe they serve Barq's. Did they used to make their own?

The Spot Drive-In in Kenosha and Kewpee's in Racine, serve their own branded root beer.

Oh man do I miss the brilliance of Hattyn!

Be advised that the Grayslake Dog 'n Suds is still operational and pretty darn tasty. Root beer and their 'World Famous Coney Dog'--the footlong variety, no less. Had it only with Coney sauce (whatthehell is Coney sauce, a runny chili?) and chopped onion. Whatever, it was not only good, but real good. Soft bun, all beef dog. I believe crinkle-cut fries accompanied this beast. Oh, and a smashing chocolate shake. I hadn't been to a drive-in for years, and the waitress girl was laughing because I didn't know how to position the car window.

They opened for the season February 27, and are rockin' & rollin'. Here's the menu:

There is an original (1963) Dog & Suds in Richmond IL. on RTE 12 just before jumping on the freeway heading to Lake Geneva. They have added a few non standard items to the menu Ex. Italian Beef, and polish Sausage. But the original menu
looks the same. not sure if the Root beer is made onsite, only that it is "The Worlds Creamiest Root Beer"

Anybody that has any ideas from this thread about the Doggie Diner in Aurora on Hill Rd. can forget about it. They have obviously been sold and their menu is now geared toward Mexican fast food. They still serve hot dogs but don't seem to know the difference between pickle and relish. And the only drinks offered with my combo was to grab something out of the cooler. They didn't even have root beer in cans.

I'll second this.

Everything was fine, not spectacular but the place is loaded with character.

We were there just a few weeks ago.

John's Drive In in Waukesha has great root beer in a frosted mug. They have a problem this year as road construction has them in a tough spot. Business was down 70% until the local social media took notice. Word went out and people are flocking to support this local icon. A friend of mine had 8 chili dogs last week in support.

Arky and Ed's in Oshkosh is a good old time stop also.
