While munching on fried bacon and flatiron sandwiches with Eggplant at the GNR dinner for Wiener and Still Champion, discussion turned to, what else, food from Central Asia - and from there, where to explore the food of this region (which, depending on your definition, includes Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan) There are a number of interesting choices for Afgan food in the area, and we settled on:

    Interested, yes!

Alas, unable to attend; I'm booked all next weekend, alas (and missing the Maxwell Street adventure as well :( )

I've long harbored extremely fond memories of my first two experiences with Afghan food at Afghan Kabob in Washington, DC. Alas, my third trip there and my one experience at a now defunct Chicago place were merely OK... would love to find a place that compares.

Haven't had Afghani food in quite some time. Please count my better half and I in.

I called, advised them we had a fairly large group (counting the 3 of us, I have 9) coming on Saturday for lunch, and they said OK...we don't need reservations. I'll double-check later in the week to make sure...

    Mhays,

Thanks for organizing lunch today. I'm still collecting my thoughts on the food, but I wanted to say sorry for ruining the picture-taking for us. It was my clumsiness (and flash) that prompted the announcement of the photo policy! I should have known better.

    eggplant,

I'm going to seek out the non-cucumber version of Israeli salad tomorrow (or later today...). You might be interested to know that Wikipedia only covers the cucumber varieties. You should think about contributing to the entry!

Not at all! I used flash for this one, and feel OK posting, because I got a lousy result to boot:

At any rate, thanks, all for coming (- and "Tim," so sorry you were shot by Sparky's contraband toy! :D not typical behavior for him, really!)

I enjoyed the meal, although what really distinguished it for me was the tangy house-made yogurt that came as a side for most dishes. I was surprised by a lot of the spinach dishes: they weren't that out of the ordinary, just out of context - the lamb shank with spinach had a base not dissimilar to good creamed spinach, and the turnover (whose name I forget) had nice, bright spinach and onion inside. I found I preferred the creamier-textured dishes e.g. lentil soup over vegetable, etc. I also liked the cardamom-flavored tea with the baklava.

Quite alright. Actually, I'd never thought of loading up a straw with three toothpicks like that. It's given me a couple ideas
