    Hi All,

Growing up, Heinemann's Bittersweet Torte (sometimes labeled "Russian Torte") was one of my favorite store bought bakery items and often served at big family dinners.

I recently learned that Heinemann's discontinued this product sometime in the last 1-2 years, possibly when they were bought out.

Does anyone know of a bakery that makes a similar cake?

    Thanks,
    Kim

There may be an answer out there. I know I have no clue because I never bought this cake.

You may want to try using search engines, because I have seen some people who actively work to reverse engineer commercial recipes to make at home. While you may not want to make it at home, this may be the next best thing.

    HI,

I did a brief search to find your post at the top of the internet pecking order. Someone else on this website also missed Heinemann's cakes from Florida:

Heinemann's Bakery, especially the 'Chocolate cake with Pistachio Green Buttercream Frosting' and 'Seven Layer bittersweet chocolate torte'

Does this seven layer torte sound like your favored cake? It could be a Sachertorte type cake.

You may want to call Heinemann's to inquire what European cake was your favored cake modeled after. Who knows, they just might answer.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Yes, the Seven Layer torte is probably identical. The cake had very thin layers of yellow or white cake alternating with thin layers of bittersweet chocolate ganche.

Thanks Cathy. I also tried searching on the web, like you, but came up empty handed. I'll try giving them a call.

I've seen a similar cake to the one described in the bakery at (gasp)Jewel on Ashalnd near Diversey: a Multi-layer thin sliced yellow cake filled with a dark chocolate icing. The ends of the cake are un-iced, I guess, to show the potential buyer how many layers there are.

I've never tried it before, so I cannot opine on its taste.
