Way back when, there was a Jack in the Box on Dempster St. in Skokie.

This reminds me of the one thing I wish we had more than anything else: Sam and Hy's on Dempster (and the experience that came with it).

Jack in the Box was my favorite of all the fast-food chains when I lived in California - that is to say, it was the one place that didn't cause prophylactic retching beforehand. I'm fine with not having one in Chicago, but I do kind of wish there was one about halfway between here and Memphis - the other options being McDonald's, Taco Bell, and other things that I refuse to eat.

I occasionally feel a nostalgia for the kind of pizza found in Berkeley. Specifically, Blondie's and Fat Slice. Squishy, doughy crust, vaguely sweet sauce, cheese carmelized from sitting under the heat lamps for too long. It isn't good, but it sure does take me back.

When I was in high school, there was a jack in the Box on Golf just west of Waukegan (it's a Popeye's now). I took my very first date there (and yes, I'm still that big a spender). She's now living with her domestic partner.

Oh yeah, I remember that Jack in the Box. As for Sam & Hy's, yes I miss it greatly. My grandparents used to live in Skokie when I was growing up and that was our "go to" spot. I guess that kind of folds into my "more delis" preference.

i've had culver's numerous times...and it seems to be hit or miss. i've had it in both michigan city and more often in Lansing (a 20 minute drive outside of chicago) and have only liked it one or two times out of the 4 or 5 times. sometimes the food is just a greasy mess. other times it was really good, for fast food.

when looking at Culver's menu, it seems like they were trying to duplicate the Dairy Queen food experience... though they have a few more fish items (fried walleye)

we don't need one as far as i'm concerned.

My one experience at the Michigan City Culver's leads me to believe it's not a very well run franchise. We've had good experiences at the ones in Marinette, WI, Marquette, MI, Stevensville, MI, and Pleasant Prairie, WI.

Same goes for the one down in Burbank, I think it's just not as well run as the franchises further north/in less urban areas.

Tim Horton's is Canada's version of Dunkin Donuts. They happen to have one in my wife's home town of Owosso, MI. She makes a bee line every time we visit, personally, I make a bee line for the smoke filled, open 24/7, farmer hangout donut shop without a name. Different strokes, I suppose.

St. Louis pizza is pretty similar (in likability) to pizza found pretty much anywhere outside of Chicago or New York (with a few notable exceptions).

My wife always wants to stop at that Horton's in Owosso as well. Must be fond childhood memories or something.

In my own vision of hell during nightmares I have now and again, there's a Stuckey's on every corner.

My lone visit was on a highway just outside of the University of Virginia several years ago when I was perusing potential colleges with my Dad. They had a buffet there and several, that's right SEVERAL, people reached in with their HANDS into the buffett selections to plop food on their plates. And I don't mean to grab a single serve item either. I'm talking about using the hand as a scoper for mashed potatoes, corn, etc. Disgusting.

I literally threw up outside in the bushes afterward. Neither my Dad nor I have or will ever go back.

Wow. Change an a to an i, and, well, we could go MANY different places with this:

I NEVER like illiteration. Please stay in school.

Is "illiteration" a Jesse Jackson word? as in, "We as a community, need to step up and wipe out all illiteration in our schools"

Anybody remember "Anton" from the show "In Living Color?" - the one who would make up words and string them together and make a sentence?

Bster - just kidding. We all know what you meant, but it's just funny because when you spell it how it is usually pronounced, the root word is changed dramatically to say the least. :P

I must disagree. For my kind of eating (as Pat Bruno would have it), Waffle House is better than 90% of the breakfasts you could eat in Chicago. Of course, that would be true of most any place south of the Mason-Dixon line. For some reason, Yankees can't seem to understand that breakfast eggs and potatoes must be cooked in animal fat.

Agreeing with your disagreement with the previous statement. Waffle House is good for what it is, and certainly better than its northern counterpart, IHOP (speaking of which, shouldn't it be more properly acronymed HOIP? After all, it's the pancakes that are international, not the house.)

Also, I would like a PM about the Stuckey's incident too. I must know.

we had a taco johns in the town i grew up in. it wasn't a local favorite, probably mainly because their tacos were really, really bad. but some of the other food was AWESOME. potato oles loaded up... MmmMm. my favorite thing there was the sierra chicken sandwich. totally amazing, i still crave it. they also had a secret salsa verde that you could ask for, that made everything taste great. i went to a taco johns in iowa (dubuque?) and they didn't have it, i was SOOOO disappointed. i went to one in new buffalo and they did have it (though i think that one has since closed) ...though there are a few nearby an hour outside of chicago or so :( :( ...
