Applesauce vs. Sour Cream

On your latkes, of course.

Posting the musical question made me ponder the reality. I know so many staunch partisans.

In my childhood, sour cream was only offered with meatless meals, but I doubt many here at Jews for Pork worry about such considerations. And even then, I had a preference, even if I couldn't always act on it.

I am solidly for both!

You did not give the option of "neither", which is my preference.

There will be both applesauce and sour cream at Saturday's meeting.

I usually request for both, then dip, dap and eat some plain, too.

That is my style also, a little of each on the side. The Russian side of my family defaults to sour cream, but when I was a kid living in Germany, apple sauce was the topping of choice.

My friends had sour cream and caviar with theirs...my personal fave.

I love 'em sprinkled with granulated sugar!

I like both applesauce and sour cream with mine. Sometimes, plain works too. I've also had them with lox and sour cream and that is a fine combination.

Homemade apple sauce and sour cream . . . and usually accompanied by fried chicken for a bit of a twist on chicken & waffles.

I asked this question to a few cohorts today. Almost everybody knew exactlly what I was referring to when I asked "applesauce or sour cream". Except for one guy, who after I explained it to him, replied with supercilious chagrin, "ketchup".

Funny. I use the exact same reason, in reverse, to explain why I don't put ketchup on fries.

The guy I quoted said almost the same thing about putting ketchup on hashbrowns (which I do). I hate to admit it, but it makes sense. My Dad used to douse his corned beef hash in ketchup, but if he ever put ketchup on my Mom's latkes, she would have dumped him in a Moscow minute.

The correct thing to put on your hash browns is the runny yolk from your eggs over easy or sunny side up. 100 times better than ketchup.

Ketchup is a travesty. It's just wrong. You might as well eat a chocolate chip bagel!

I alternate between sour cream and apple sauce.

I always thought that sour cream was something "other people" put on latkes. In fact it still seems odd (yes, like ketchup on hot dogs).

The trade off we make is to go with fresh applesauce which is simple to make and no sour cream. This justifies cooking the latkes in schmaltz ( a 50-50 combo of veg oil and schmaltz ).

The "bright" and clean flavor of fresh applesauce on the sinfully fried potato pancake has me dreaming about next week. The sour cream just isn't necessary in our/my opinion.

Ah, a Galitzianer!

When I order them out, I usually ask for both, but I eat them with sour cream exclusively. The applesauce is for dessert

Growing up, latkes at my mother's house were a vehicle for sour cream and applesauce with cinnamon was for dessert. At my father's house, applesauce was all that was offered unless I made a ruckus. Is it any wonder they were not destined to grow old together?

Now, years later, my father takes 40mg of Lipitor a day and my mother has no cholesterol issues... go figure !
