My wife and I watched the movie Waitress last night...great movie...but more about pies. After this movie, we both had an incredible urge to eat pie and this got me wondering, are there any true pie-diners in Chicagoland?

ISO Pie Diner, true pie diner, with original homemade pies, all kinds of pies, not baker's square, but true good make your knees shake pies.

LTH has found just your place. Check out GNR winner The Depot American Diner

Stolen from the above thread is Mike G's lovely picture of the pie of your hopes and dreams

    Ann-

I gotta say from that picture, that pie filling looks canned (*shudder*). Have you had a piece of that pie, and is it, indeed, canned? (I've had a hankering for fruit pies lately.)

gotta admit - and i've only been there once, but....i hate to say that the pie at Depot Diner was head and shoulders by far the low-light of the meal. Everything else was amazing.

I will have to try again.

GNR winner Healthy Food isn't perhaps a "Pie Diner" but Gina's 5 fruit pie is awfully good:

Don't have a shot of it, but the mixed berry pie at Charcoal Grill was excellent, and also epic in proportions. Again, not a diner, but good homemade pie.

Anyone know where to get frozen tart cherries? I think making your own is your best bet.

during farmers market season, the Stover's booth sells pre-pitted frozen tart cherries. I made 2 cherry pies with Stover's cherries for thanksgiving (they were outstanding if I do say so myself) - I agree: fresh or fresh-frozen good quality local cherries is the only way to go. The flavor was so intense and delicious.

I have never had the Depot's cherry pie. We had their apple and pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, however, and both were excellent. The apple was particularly good--piled very high, not at all mushy, a good tart apple flavor coming through.

Certainly better than anything I could make.
