I've got a large 1 gallon can of stewed tomatoes. I need to use about half of them, would it be OK to freeze the rest?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

    HI,

Freezing beats tossing them away. I would certainly do it.

I just wanted to make sure it was safe, although I guess I don't know why it wouldn't be.

When I read the subject line, the only thought that occurred to me was texture, not safety. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be safe and, since they're already stewed, the texture will suffer less (though my guess is they'll turn mushy). If you're truly concerned, check out the Department of Agriculture website; I think there's a Food Safety Administration or some such thing within it that has all kinds of useful information for questions like this.

When I first read this subject line, I pictured someone placing a can of tomatoes in the freezer.

I would imagine that the only problem would be a change (for the worse) in texture, as Gypsy Boy points out. If you're using them in sauce applications, then I think they'll be fine coming from the freezer.

On occasion, I have purchased a #10 can of tomatoes on sale at GFS Marketplace for $1. When I do that, I end up freezing about 1/2 the can. I generally use the frozen tomatoes for stews or chils and have noticed no real loss in quality.

I do it all the time with no problems. I use it on pizza, in sauce and anywhere else I would use the canned.
