Would greatly appreciate recommendations for restaurant fitting the following: 1) In general vicinty of Oak Park... could be OP, Elmwood, River Forest, Maywood, any part of neighboring W/NW Chicago... 2) Romantic 3) Quiet enough for a conversation 4) Preferably near some other places: movies / bars / coffee shops, etc. 5) Cuisines: preferably Italian but could go mediterranean, french, mexican, asian....

Decent wine list would be a plus.

La Piazza in Forest Park. I can't seem to find a post on it here, though I'm sure there have been some, but here's a quick review from the esteemed Vital Information. http://vitalinformation.blogspot.com/20 ... chive.html
Around the corner from the excellent Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor and lots of other places.

I would highly recommend Cafe le Coq - French, not Italian, but a great ambience. I've heard that some people have had spotty service but I have been happy the couple times I've gone there. Sometimes they have BYO wine deals with Cabernet & Co. next door.

I think the Pasta Shoppe is also a very nice restaurant.

For some reason I feel like I'm having this discussion in two places at once :)

For romantic plus something to do afterwards in walking distance, I'd go to Hemmingways and then take in a movie at the Lake theater--about a block less than half a mile away. An alternative stroll would be down Oak Park Avenue, particularly to show off Val's Halla Records.
But the Forest Park business district is much more interesting overall, and La Piazza would fit your plan well unless you think a movie is the way to go.
If you haven't been to Fitzgeralds', however, you owe yourself the treat. Check out http://www.fitzgeraldsnightclub.com/
You could eat there, of course, in their new restaurant. It's not terrible, by any means.
But if it's a romantic restaurant you want with great food, go to Hemmingways.
