Looking for great Huachinago

Post #1 - December 12th, 2007, 10:27 pmI want to celebrate my birthday and I am looking to go to a Mexican restaurant for Huachinago a la Veracruzana or Huachinango con mariscos. I had this dish at Taqueria La Oaxaquena and it was great but I would like to try it at another restaurant for comparison.
Any suggestions or advice?

Try the vapores (tamales), panuchos con consome, and a few side tacos of cochinita pibil or any of the weekly rellenos while you're there.
Tell Antonio or whomever serves you that you know your fish, and they'll make sure to give you the best of the batch, or will decline outright to serve you if it's not at the peak of freshness (in which case, eat other things, and try back again). I find their snapper very authentic and delicious but also quite a mess to eat between the bones, banana leaves, and sauce, and it's not worth it unless it's fresh from the market / truck.

Post #3 - December 13th, 2007, 6:41 amI enjoy the hauchanago at C. Manny's on Elston & Irving. This place doesn't get a lot of play on LTH, but it's quite good and authentic. El Barco also does a decent rendition.

Post #4 - December 13th, 2007, 11:16 amOne of my favorite dishes at Casa de Isaac is their Huachinango a la Veracruza. They serve it either whole or as filets. I've found their snapper and other fish to be quite fresh.
So if you live north, you might want to try CdI. Note that they close at 3 pm on Fridays and reopen one hour after sundown on Saturdays.

Post #5 - December 13th, 2007, 11:54 amNot long ago, I had an excellent Huachinango al Mojo de Ajo at La Cazuela in Rogers Park. It had crispy skin, tender flesh and was absolutely smothered in garlic. I don't recall if they serve snapper Veracruz style.
