Any recommendations for a restaurant for dinner before a show at the old Victory Gardens - what they now call their Greenhouse theater- south of Fullerton on Lincoln?

I haven't been to Cafe Bernard or Red Rooster in years. Are they still good? What about Athenian Room? I am definitely interested in something a little nicer than Taco Burrito palace! Ideally, we would like to walk from dinner to the theater.

    Thanks for your help.

Athenium Room remains same as it ever was. I love those fries!

    mccadas-

If you haven't done a search yet, I'd recommend searching for the restaurants you mentioned. There have been some recent discussions on a few of them.

    Enjoy the show!

I'm always ready to endorse Athenian Room. The chicken is still lemony and moist with crisp skin. The skirt steak is one of the great bargain steaks IMHO.
And of course, just across Halsted is O Fame, which a lot of people like a lot if you're in that sort of mood. Last time I was there, it was OK, but nothing special. Pleasant surroundings, unobjectionable food. In that mode again is the newish (1 year?) Vietnamese place just a few doors up from VG. It got several nice reviews, and when I was there the owners/staff were very friendly and eager. I found the food fairly bland however (though not bad). I think the owners also own a place on Argyle, though I forget which one. In a way it is to Vietnamese what O Fame is to real Italian.
If you're looking for convenience first you could do worse, but if the meal itself is a priority, I'd go back to the Athenian Room.

When we went to VG this fall, we had dinner at Cafe Bernard which we enjoyed very much. They have a great deal for VG patrons. For $25 you get a house salad or soup of the day, an entree and dessert. You can choose from a special menu of 5 or 6 entrees. Two of us had a lamb shank and one skirt steak. Food and service were both good.
