I'm a long-time lurker who has benefited greatly from the knowledge and advise of other users on LTH Forum.

In August I will be moving to New York City to start law school at NYU, and am wondering if there is a similarly helpful online community there. I'm sure that Chowhound has a healthy presence in that market, but somehow LTH has always seemed a bit more civil, and thus, much more enjoyable.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for all the advice over the years. I've discovered many, many wonderful places from reading your posts.

I enjoy egullet more than Chowhound, although I'm sure there are even better resources out there.

I second figmolly's suggestion. Egullet is much better than chowhound, in my opinion, and also has a large contingent of NY'ers contributing. I don't know if there is anything more like LTHForum, but Egullet is a great place to start.

Mouthfuls is a very intriguing site but also vexing in many ways--visit for a few days and you will find out why. It is a national/international site, but the largest focus is on New York. Some of the people on that site are brilliant, others too.

There is some off-line community of the Mouthfuls folks in NYC, but no where like here.

VI, thanks for the heads up on mouthfuls, I hadn't run into this site before. Great section on France, I'll bump up a Paris post and link.

There is nothing like LTH forum in terms of the social side. eGullet has useful information, but also institutional problems, and, when I was living in NYC no social side.

In addition to Mouthfuls, if you are particularly interested in the high-end restaurants, the best site IMHO has been Opinionated About
