I do think this is probably impossible, but if anyone can help me, the LTHForum folks can.

I was planning to make a salad topped with chèvre--the fresh, log kind--for Christmas dinner. The store I shopped in didn't have any, but I just figured I'd stop by Jewel or Treasure Island on the way home from church last night. Did it occur to me that supermarkets would be closing at 6 last night? Well, no it didn't, though it should have.

Does anyone know of any market, gourmet store, heck, any store that will be open today and selling cheese? I mean the kind of cheese I need? To make this even more of a challenge, I do not drive, so it needs to be either in or close to Albany Park or downtownish (the bf will be at his dad's near State & Division today). Oh, and it would obviously be a plus not to be price-gouged too egregiously.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can give.

    Happy holidays!

    Miss Mimi,

All the likely suspects seem to be closed, but I have an out of the box suggestion, use feta cheese instead of goat cheese. Ahhh, you say, but where can I get nice fresh feta cheese near Albany park, why Sahar on Kedzie, open until 5pm today (Christmas day), that's where.

For topping a salad feta, while stronger than fresh goat cheese, will work in a pinch.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

I thought of feta, actually, but I wasn't sure whether any place on Kedzie would be open. Thanks for the info!

Lincolnwood Produce is open today and they carry several kinds of Feta, but even better, they are likely to have the goat cheese you are looking for. Also, have you tried Whole Foods?

I'm assuming that's in Lincolnwood? Unfortunately, too time-consuming to get there today.

Whole Foods is open on Christmas?

City Fresh Market at Kedzie and Devon is open until 6pm today. They have a very good selection of cheese, including raw-milk manchego from Spain. I am pretty sure they will have goat's milk cheese.

No, I don't believe so, but I suggest you call Whole Foods for the definitive answer.
