I'm taking an old college roommate out to lunch this week - The Gage seems perfect, now that he is emerging from his burgers/Pringles/Oreos phase (back in the day, it was truly a sight to behold). However, I think it would be most convenient to meet somewhere on the North Side; my knowledge of the scene ceased when I moved out. Is there anything similar in substance (or at least in general atmosphere/concept/price point) in that direction?

What about the Hopleaf in Andersonville? (EDIT - never mind, they're not open for lunch, only open at lunchtime for drinks on weekends, not the kitchen)

    Hi there,

The Grafton probably fits what you're looking for, and even a bit cheaper. The Gage is owned and run by the same folks behind the The Grafton (at least that was the case when The Gage initially opened).

The Grafton has a good selection of beers on tap, above-avearge pub food, and very friendly patrons and staff.

I highly recommend Atlantic Bar & Grill. I used to really like The Grafton, but found their burgers (and other food in general) went downhill a few years ago. Ever since being tuned on to Atlantic Bar & Grill here, it's been my go to place for a good burger and a friendly staff in Lincoln Square.

I don't know how similar it is but Kuma's is my go-to lunchtime destination.
I can't imagine a college grad would be disappointed with their menu.
(Full disclosure - my wife cooks there)
I love restaurants. You're sitting there and all of a sudden, there's food. It's like magic.

According to their listing on Metromix, the Grafton is only open for lunch on weekends. (Atlantic B&G and Kuma's Corner are both open for lunch seven days a week.)

Well, we ended up running late for a movie, so we just grabbed a quick lunch at a nearby diner (nothing to write home about). Thanks for the recommendations, though!

Kuma's and The Gage are both great places with great food, but for me the similarities end there. Not that I would rate either The Gage or Kuma's better or worse than one another, just very different. Kuma's more "alternative" and The Gage more "establishment". Personally, I prefer Kuma's most of the time, but there is a time for each.
