    Hey LTH-ers
I'd like to make some Cochinita Pibil in my brand-new slow-cooker, but I haven't been able to locate any El Yucateco brand Achiote Paste (see link). I've tried a few Latin American grocers recently and haven't been able to find it. If any one has a full-proof source for this stuff preferably on the South Side (south of Madison at least), and could tip me off that would be great. Oh and if you know of a store that would have achiote and banana leaves (and maybe avocado leaves) that would be fantastic. Thanks

I've seen achiote at Edgewater Produce on Clark and Harvestime Foods on Lawrence. I also recall buying it at Aguascalientes on 26th in Little Village. It is a little brick of paste and some places might have it by the register or on a counter, don't be shy about asking. You often see the different leaves for tamale wrappings in the freezer (Edgewater has banana leaves in freezer right now). If you see any grocer catering to Guatemalans go there, as they will most surely have all the items you're looking for.

    good luck (buena suerte!)

    Thanks bjt

Think I'll try Aguascalientes on 26th first since it's a bit closer. I'm still open to any other suggestions

Did you try Pete's on Pulaski near 51st? I hear that is a wonderful store, especially for Latino groceries but just for produce in general. (I mis-read your post and actually thought you were trying to avoid going south, whoops).

My girlfriend is a huge fan of the tres leches cakes made in-house at Pete's. A nice way to end your feast . . .

Cermak Produce on North Ave in Humboldt Park has achiote powder .... which I would assume becomes paste if you add some water.
