has anyone recently had the tasting menu at Avenues? looking for a relatively recent review. I've heard some very wonderful things and also heard that the non-tasting menu is much better.

    thanks

We were there for NYE. They were doing a 10 course tasting menu. It was outstanding, but I'm not sure if the dishes that were served are on the current tasting menu or not.

Every other time I've been there I've done a tasting menu. It's been excellent every time.

I ate there in March. At that time, they offered a menu with the choice of 3, 5, or 10 courses ($90, $120, $160). I read a report of someone who went there later in the year and they were then offering a choice of 5, 10, or 15 courses. Once you get up into that range, it's really pretty much a tasting menu no matter which option you get.

I've never heard anyone claim that one menu is better than another. You're going to get a spectacular dinner no matter what you get there!

For what it's worth, and in case you were hoping for a table this month, Avenues will be closed for nearly all of January as The Peninsula redecorates the hotel lobby.

Also, I understand from someone who works for the restaurant that Chef Bowles is likely to leave Avenues to open his own restaurant soon, and that a sous chef from Alinea (Curtis Duffy, maybe?) is tapped to take his place in Avenues.

Curtis has taken a non-restaurant, chef position with LEYE Corporate, so I don't think that's going to happen . . . but you never know. I've heard a few other names mentioned but I've never actually received confirmation that chef GEB is planning to leave Avenues, though the rumor has been floating around out there for some time.

It was posted in another topic that they will reopen January 15. It doesn't say anything on their website, one way or the other. On opentable.com, it says "Please note that Avenues is closed for renovations during the month of January. We will reopen on Friday, February 1st. Please join us at that time." I suggest calling ahead if you're interested in going there this month.

I heard a rumor that he was going to be opening a small spot in the former Café Salamaria space. Well, in full disclosure I didn't actually hear that rumor, but it sure would be poetic if it happened.

There is some sort of Persian restaurant opening in the old Salamera space. The awning has been up for a month or so and they have a help wanted notice on the door.
