Lau Pa has the best satay. Try the duck. It melts in your mouth. I also liked the mutton-but that duck is so good.
The book that you recommend, the Makansutrara is one I had. you can pick one up when you are there.
I generally do not go to restaurants when I am there, the hawkers are so cheap and so good.
I did go to Jade Palace at the Paragon shopping mall, it's almost all the way at the top. It is tremendous Chinese. You just don't get food like that in Chicago. It is a bit pricey, but every restaurant you will go to in Singapore is pricey-especially when you can go to a Hawker and get filled up for around 10 bucks!
I ate one light lunch on Arab street. I can't remember the name of the place, but it was next to the billboard highlighting the historical sights. Had some banana fritters, some other stuff that was very good. The waiter just ordered it all for me.
There is an excellent Chinese place in the Geylang district. This is the red light district in Singapore! But the place makes great food cheap. I apologize, but the name escapes me. All the Chinese, Indian and Arabic names run together in my head.
There are some really good Indian places over in Indian town. My friend took me to a street where they are at. Some of them only serve you food on a banana leaf. I have not eaten at them, but assume they are good. Everything else is good there.
I had some great Teh Terak too. It is a Malaysian tea. Really nice.
Don't forget to try some durian! Then go to Clarke Quay and ride the bungee ride they have there. Slingshot into the air.
