Tacos del Lago (Downtown Evanston)

Tacos del Lago is at 822 Clark Street in downtown Evanston. I think that's Clark and Sherman, by the Papa John's.

I've been to this place about four times so far. I like to support independent places, so I figured the best way to do so is to spread the word.

The menu consists of basically tacos, burritos, tostadas, and tortas. Most of the dinners are around $7-8, and that comes with rice and beans. The most expensive thing on the menu is carne asada for $9.95. There are a handful of Mexican beers (Corona, Tecate, etc.) for $3-3.50. There is one desert--homemade flan for $2.50.

This place isn't going to make Check Please, but for what it is (basically a really nice taqueria), I highly recommend it. The prices are super cheap, and the service has always been good. In fact, every time I've been there, one of the co-owners was my waiter. It's not the fanciest Mexican food around, but everything does seem very fresh, and nothing is greasy.

I should have taken some photos, but I didn't think about it. I'll do so next time I go.

Had dinner there tonight. Steak tostada, chicken taco and was thinking pork taco but my mouth said steak so I doubled up. All in all I was happy with the meal. The steak was grilled on a gas grill and you could definitely taste that. Much better than griddled but not La Pasadita. Chicken was good as well. Friendly service and $2/taco, $3/tostadas make this pretty much the best bet for Mexican in downtown Evanston. The other places are just too pricey for my taqueria honed tastes.

I think I didn't explain the pricing well. The dinners (served with rice and beans) and $7-8, but a taco or tostada alone are $2-3, like you said. Burritos are $6. Tortas are $5 or something...

This place is decent, a pretty good value. My office has found it a reliable place to have celebratory student events, e.g. end-of-the-quarter, end-of-the-year type functions. However, the first time I went there, I had high hopes--given the name of the place--that they would serve fish tacos. No fish tacos (at least as of a couple months ago)...

I don't think they do. Steak, chicken, pork, or beef. That's it, I think.
