Good spot for birthday party in Chinatown?

Our grandson will be celebrating his first birthday next month and his parents would like to have a party for 40+ family & friends in Chinatown. Has anyone attended or planned a function in any of the Chinatown area restaurants that might fit the bill?? Room suitable for the party & good food & service are the priorities!!

Lao Sze Schuan is a great place for this. The annual Jewish Christmas Eve Dinneris held there every year. They've got a private room upstairs of the actual restaurant that would be perfect for a group that size.

Funny.... Lao Sze Chuan was my first thought also, but hadn't known anyone to use their services for a function. Thanks for posting about the December 24th get-together. I really enjoyed reading through the comments and pictures. Would love to attend one of these years!

Phoenix is another option. I've attended an annual Chinese New Year dinner there for the last couple of years organized by one of my alumni groups. They work with the organizers to design a banquet set menu for us, a group of about 60 last year, its worked out pretty well & the food has always been consistently very good.

The private room on the 2nd floor was pretty tight once we went beyond 30 people on Christmas Eve. However the larger room on a weeknight on the 2nd floor by simply commandering 4 tables will do.

I think this place is very solid and appropriate for a party. I tend to want to eat foods less familiar to me so I am always trying someplace new but this is a long time go to spot for me. The seafood seems to be the specialty but everything is good and they do a great job serving family style.

One of my wedding showers was at Phoenix. It was nearly 50 people and the staff handled it beautifully. Also, from what my sister told me was the price was extremely reasonable. We got a TON of food. So much that many people too leftovers home. All the guests thought the food was delicious. The menu for the shower was a combination of dim sum and regular entrees. The staff did a great job. They let the hosts come early to decorate the tables. It was a really lovely party. I plan events for a living and I would absolutely host an event there.

I would second The Phoenix. It's authentic, but not intimidating. And it's definitely good for a special occasion.

Phoenix is very reasonable in price - we're paying $35 per head, inc tax & tip, for the 10 course event banquet we have coming up, which includes Peking duck (pancakes & then stir fry), stir fried lobster, fish with scallions & ginger & a bunch of other dishes. I'm sure they would design a simpler menu if you prefer. The staff really managed nicely & we also had plenty of food left over for anyone who wanted to take the extras (the staff provided boxes to pack it).
