Las Vegas Strip

Traveling in April with hubbie and staying at Caesar's.....

Need tips on breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks/bar.
Budget, hole in the wall finds or best for your money. Will splurge on some meals. Those hidden gems..... :O)

Questions:

Will you have a rental car for your trip? If NOT, it limits you access to some of the better "hole in the wall" places.

There is a monorail that goes between many of the Strip hotels and the Convention Center. Other than that, you're pretty much limited to taxis and rental cars. There is a municipal bus system of sorts, but I don't know very much about it.

There is a double decker bus (The Deuce) that travels from the strip to downtown Vegas for $2. Lots of people use it so you might have to wait awhile. Cabbing it is easier, but if you plan on more than one cab ride per day you might as well rent a car since it'll be cheaper.

Sure, I guess that you could take a bus or the monorail around Las Vegas. At this point, the monorail connects the Las Vegas Convention Center and the MGM casino which will get you around the lower Strip. The monorail is pretty much the equivalent of those Chicago shuttles between the train stations and the Magnificent Mile. There are a lot of restaurants in the area but they are geared toward tourists and the expense account crowd. And you miss all of the great out of the way places.

There is a bus system around Las Vegas called The Cat. Their schedule is online. To me, it is a PITA to learn a whole transit system when 1) car rentals are dirt cheap and 2) parking is free.

Check out www.lasvegasadvisor.com. They always have good information on restaurants of all kinds.

I was just in Vegas for the first time in January. I'll note that we caught a cab from the Venetian to the Pepper Mill and got a lot of attitude from the cabbie for what he considered a "short ride" -- admittedly we got him out of the line where he was probably hoping to pick up an airport fare, but I would think that if we'd taken more cabs we'd have gotten more of that. (We took the monorail back, but it's a little overpriced and inflexible, and probably really mostly there for conventioneers.)

Besides the Pepper Mill (great ambiance; my waffle was totally ordinary), we had a fantastic meal at Bouchon in the Venetian, some good sandwiches at craftwich in (deep in) the MGM Grand, decent noodle soups at the fancyish asian place inside Caesar's, and actually an excellent wedding reception dinner at Joe's Stone Crab.

We also rode the regular city buses (not the Deuce, which is a special bus run by the same system) out to the Pinball Hall of Fame, which was the highlight of the trip for me. (Bouchon was second. Does that earn me an LTH demerit? Even if it was a very close second?)

Not limited to the Strip, but you might want to check out the Vegas part of this Google Map I made based on some earlier LTH posts. It probably needs to be updated...

Oh my gosh! I'm sooo glad I came looking for new Las Vegas info! I went to that site, and they have my two favorite pinball games that I haven't seen since the 80s!!! I'm so pumped now! We're going back in April and to heck with the casinos - I'm putting my money in pinball! LOL Why yes, I am a nerd.
