I'm feeling a need for my annual pastitsio fix. The last time I had some memorable pastitsio (Most of it is pretty mediocre. Like split pea soup or a reuben sandwich, it can be scrumptuous, or totally nasty), was at a little Greek spot on North Broadway around Belmont. Does anyone know the name of this place and if it's still cookin'? Or anyplace else where you have recently had some outstanding pastitsio? Some good okra would be a plus also.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

Gyros on the Spit (3138 N Broadway) closed over five years ago. I still miss that place.

I don't have any can't-miss recommendations for pastitsio but one place that sounds worth trying is Mythos, recently opened on Montrose. Reportedly they prepare their pastitsio to order, a promising sign.

That's it, GOTS. Too bad, they had great gyros too.

In terms of Greek Town, I find each rendition pretty similar.

However, I think Greek Island stands out a little. Seems to me to be a little creamier and more consistent.

I enjoy making my own, too - it's so easy and cheap compared to what is usually charged.

You can pick up kefalotyri cheese in Greek Town or @ Caputo's Cheese Market.

My husband and I got a carry-out order from Mythos last week that included pastitsio and it was delicious. It was made to order--when I called the order in, the owner told me it took 25 minutes to prepare and would need an extra 5 minutes to sit before she could transport it from the individual dish to a carry-out dish. It was delicious. I ate the whole thing at once but should have only eaten half. It was definitely enough for two servings. I've only had pastitsio about 5-7 times before so I'm no expert but this one was my favorite. My husband had never had it before and thought it was delicious as well.
