I want to make the Zuni chicken stock, and Judy Rodgers recommends using an entire chicken. Anyone know where I can find a whole chicken with head and feet in the city?

I'm almost certain Tai Nam sells them whole with feet and legs. I usually come here for pork, though.

Certainly you could get one at any of the live poultry places in the city.

I noted feet and head on chicken last week at Viet Hoa, though many of the Asian markets and most, if not all, live poultry places should have them available.

Almost any of the Asian grocery stores in Chinatown offer the whole chicken with head and feet still attached. Look for it at the meat counter. They're usually sold by weight plus $1-$2. If you'd like to pick out your own live chicken you can go to Wing Ho 168 Live Poultry next door to Ricobene's at 26th Street and Princeton. They'll defeather and clean it for you as you wait.

Best place I know in the area for poultry is Harrison's Poultry Farm in Glenview. Fresh chicken cut to your specifications. I'm not sure if they do chicken with head and feet still attached, but they'd be a good bet to call.

You can also try the other live poultry markets in Chicago. Check Yahoo yellow pages; I found a handful of listings. I've gone to the Wing Ho Live Poultry Store south of Chinatown, 244 W. 26th Street, 312.225.5623. They have several varieties from which you can choose-hens, guinea hens, silkies, free range, etc. You can either pick out your own chicken or have them pick one for you and they have it defeathered and cleaned as you wait. Not for the squemish though. I admit that I was a little uncomfortable as I heard the "commotion." And the bag is still warm as you take it home which didn't bother me as much as the "commotion."

    Mapped. I don't know why. It's a problem I have.

I came across this spot as well
    Windy City Poultry
    4601 S Kedzie Ave
    Chicago, IL 60632

Not clear whether they sell live or not.

Thanks very much for mentioning Windy City Poultry. I was aware of them but wasn't sure if they were still in business, as the shop didn't look open the last time I passed by. I'm happy to confirm they are indeed open and have live chickens and fresh eggs 6 days a week. They also carry rabbits and quite a variety of poultry including guinea hens, quail, partridge, silkies and Khaki Campbell ducks. Not everything is available every day, however, so call first.

I added WCP to the list above (as well as in another thread). Although I don't claim it's complete, it's the best list of Chicago poulterers I'm aware of. Again, corrections and additions are most welcome. I'll attempt to keep the list up to date.

Curious if anyone knows if any of the places mentioned on this thread sells only the legs with the feet still attached by the pound?

    thanks

I buy chicken feet and necks by the lb. for making stock at Fresh Farms. They are usually in stock (meaning on the shelves, not necessarily in soup).
