    LTH,

Johnny's Uncle Jim's is known for it's overabundant breakfasts, in particular the Johnny's Special a massive platter of eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, hash browns, mound of griddled veggies and toast for $5.95. I've had it once, about 3-years ago and, unless I become a lumberjack, doubt I will be repeating the exercise in sheer unbridled gluttony.

There is, however, lurking just beneath the falstaffian Johnny's Special, decent fairly priced diner food. Nothing earth shattering, just solid lunch fair. Steve Z went for the Wisconsin Style Tuna Melt.

I had a just fine Club House. Not the in-house baked turkey of a Patty's Diner, but a nice quick lunch after a trip to Russo Ace for a WSM, which Russo has in stock for $189.00, $15 off if you mention wiviott.com.

Service was friendly and efficient, Iced tea strong, only down side were the nice looking hash browns, no fries, were very salty.

In addition to the counter there's a good sized dining room with tables and chairs.

Good deal, I'll be there tomorrow. Do I have to show a signed 5-step contract to get that price? :D

I've been having breakfast and lunch there for about 20 years, when it was simply "Johnny's Diner,", owned and run by "Johnny", a relative of the Billy Goat Tavern folks. Felice (the grill man's real name), also formerly known by Johnny as "Noriega" due to his uncanny resemblance to the Panamanian dictator, can whip up a mean breakfast in nothing flat. Before Johnny, the original owner, got blown away by a shotgun blast during a bad drug buy in a West side alley, the place was also good for some serious drama as he and his girlfriend (the erstwhile waittress at the time) would throw knives and dishes at each other, and scream like sailors during the course of your meal. They make a great steak and egg breakfast, check it out. Make sure to get your hash browns "with vegies" (one of Johnny's "trademark" dishes). Normally the soups are pretty good. Too bad you guys had to let the cat out of the bag. Now the place will be crawling with yupsters and dinks expecting cafe latte and ruining the bargain pricing structure. Thanks a lot!

Well, seeing as how Montrose and Central is no longer an area I drive through after my aunt moved to Buffalo Grove, I was going to dismiss this thread from my memory. But...

Yes, by all means do try it. The buckshot has pretty much disappeared from most of the food.

I just checked their phone number. Disconnected. Doesn't look good. This place has been around forever, can't believe it's gone.

Although I never had a chance to eat here, I noticed a "Lost Our Lease" sign in the window last week.
I love restaurants. You're sitting there and all of a sudden, there's food. It's like magic.
