I'm liking the box wine thing, I keep a box of Black Box Cab in the pantry for when I just want a glass of red. (Well, it's just me & the girl child in the house, so sometimes opening a bottle would be a waste, especially during the week. Not to mention it's quite economical...like 89 cents a glass!)

I know a lot of people still equate box wine with those awful Almaden boxes.....but I think box wine is great! I have often though of placing a box of white in the freezer overnight before toting it to the beach...seems it would be easiest to manueuver on the sand.

    What say you?

We solve this by buying a lot of half bottles. There's good box wine to be had, just not in the us. A lot of really nice wine is sold in south america in boxes, though for the price i'll just drink my wine from a bottle thank you.

Love the concept but have yet to find a red or a white that makes me want to have 3L in the 'fridge or pantry.

as far as leftover wine goes... I purchased a bunch of 375ml and 187ml
screwcap bottles and when I open a 750ml bottle and know I'll not be finishing it in one night, I'll open the bottle and pour off 1/2 or 3/4's of the bottle in to various smaller bottles (right to the top) and then place them in the fridge. If I think of it, I'll write the name of the wine on the bottle with a sharppie or on some tape. More often than not, I'll have a "mystery" wine a few days or weeks later.... :D

I've had decent luck with the Three Thieves label of wine, and I've generally found that Cellier des Dauphins' Côtes-du-Rhône (3L for ~$20) is good. I pick this up at Sam's. I've heard that they have another good, french red called Cuvée de Peña, but I haven't managed to try it out myself.

I love the concept, and would like to have an ecologically sound way of doing it at home with leftover wine :)

The Peña red is OK, I've asked the importer, Dan Kravitz (Hand Picked Selections) for a white but nothing yet....
FWIW the Three Thieves products I've seen are boxed wine (tetra-pak) but not the kind of box wine with the internal bladder of wine that keeps air contact to a minimum.

I agree that the Pena red (sorry - don't know how to input the tilde) is fine, maybe slightly better than OK for me, but it's hard to gauge how much I'm giving it a break because I know it comes from a box and usually boxed wines stink.

Even if we could get excellent wines in a box, my sentiment about them is that I don't think I'd want 3L of one wine in my fridge. So I guess I'm in the "nay" category. (Plus it takes up too much room in the wine fridge.)

We use the Black Box cabernet and chardonnay. A half-liter carafe makes a good serving for the two of us for an everyday dinner especially since we tend to drink all of a bottle once it is opened. The box is also good for drawing the right amount of wine for cooking.

    Hi,

WBEZ Chicago Amplified hosts a podcast of Culinary Historian's 25 Years of Great Chicago Cooking and Drinking. If you go to this podcast, then forward to approximately 48:45, there is a discussion on wine closures by Barbara Glunz from the House of Glunz Wine Shop.

I like boxed wine for cooking purposes only. It's great to have wine on hand when you only need a dash to deglaze a pan sauce.
    GOOD TIMES!
