I've seen it, and bought it, at most of the big liquor stores. That said, it has been a few years since I bought it, so I can't promise it will still be there. (A search of Binny's and Sam's websites fails to turn it up.)

For me, the real trick is not just getting Advocaat, but finding Warninks Advocaat -- much, much better than the more commonly available Bols Advocaat.

Warninks Advocaat has been made in Holland since 1616 and was one of the original producers of advocaat. Warninks Advocaat is full bodied with a sweet and creamy texture with aromas of vanilla. Almost like “boozy custard!!” It is a classic brand that is enjoyed in many cocktails as well as neat or on the rocks.

I'd call first, but I have bought Advocaat at Binny's in the past. If not there, Schaefer's in Wilmette seems to carry things no one else does.

I wouldn't rely on Sam's website; in my experience, their website is notoriously incomplete. Call them; I'd be very surprised to learn that they didn't have it.

Sam's has the absolutely strangest selection. I'm usually able to find a few really cool things I'm looking for at the River North location (behind the whole foods- that is river north right?) but then I go looking for things like good bitters or really unique small batch bourbon and it just isn't there. Also, I've said it before and I'll say it again, their staff irritates the living heck out of me. Where's X- oh it's in isle 15. Great, so are 13,000 other bottles. Any better clue or maybe you could walk 25 ft and show me.

In any event, when it's something that I can't find I'll put up with just about whatever cr*p to get it.

I agree about their stock, though there are some surprising things available and depth in some nice areas. As to the staff, I've found it quite variable, depending in part on personality and in part on how busy the store is. I've been lucky with some people who have willingly spent a long time talking with me about things and unlucky with others. Still, I'd be very surprised if they didn't have at least one brand of Advokaat. Good luck.

I've seen more than one brand at Gene's Sausage. Unfortunately, I can't remember what the choices were, only that there were several.

I adore this eggnog-flavored liqueur. I've had it in Belgium and Russia, and a home-made version here, but haven't seen it in stores. However, University Market in Hyde Park (57th and Kenwood) has these amazing imported Polish cookies that come in two flavors: Advocaat and Toffee. They're wonderful soft cake-type cookies with a runny caramel filling (laced with the flavor) and coated in dark chocolate. I will buy some, photograph, and post at next opportunity.

I've never had advocaat and I actually have specifically designed advocaat glasses (in a metal holder) that I've been meaning to use for years. Along with the glasses (which I received as a Christmas present) I got two recipes from one of my parent's friend's grandmothers (last name Braaksma - can't get much more Dutch than that).

Here they are (if you try them before me please post the results:

    Advo-kat - 1st Recipe

    10 eggs
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup vodka
1 package vanilla suiker (apparently available at the Dutch store of which there are many in West Michigan, maybe you can find it in Andersonville?)

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Cook slightly without boiling, stir often. Cool to room temp and serve with whipped cream.

    Advo-kat - 2nd recipe

    12 eggs
    2 packages vanilla suiker
    1 cup sugar
    1/2 bottle vodka

Beat the eggs in a medium bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and cook in a double boiler (or over boiling water), don't boil. Stir constantly. Cool and serve.

They don't seem much different, the second one looks to be stronger. I haven't tried either method and don't know how easy it would be to find vanilla suiker here.

I just remembered (late, I know) that Oak Mill Bakery fills paczkis with advokaat-spiked custard and they're awfully yummy.
