What are your favorite Ethiopian restaurants in Chicago? I want to introduce some co-workers to Ethiopian food.

Also, I know that there are a number of Ethiopian spots on the northside. The last couple of times we have gone out together, we have headed north. Does anyone know of any great Ethiopian food on the southside?

    Thanks for your help!

My wife just went out Friday night to Ethiopian Diamond. However it is on the north side she had nothing but great things to say about this place. The ethiopian tea was great as well as the breads, not as sour as she had in the past. Appetizers, one veggie and one meat combo platter split between 2 and 2 teas, with tip $23 a person. Great value and a fun atmosphere!

Ha, I was at Diamond on Saturday and it was my first ever Ethiopian dining experience.

With that said, i would totally recommend this place. The staff was very helpful in explaining the dishes to me, etc and they have a few sample dishes with several different items.

    Check it out.

    Hi SDG,

You might want to try a site search of ethiopian restaurants. There has been considerable discussion on LTH of Ethiopian Diamond, Ras Dashen, Sheba Cafe, Demera, etc. You can search with google by typing in:

    good luck!

I, too, would encourage using the search function. There are a number of threads on a variety of places. That said, I'm not a huge fan of Ethiopian and even I enjoyed the food at Demera quite a bit.

I thought the OP was asking about Ethiopean on the South Side ... I'm not sure there is any, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

You're absolutely 100% correct and I have just enrolled in a remedial reading class.

Thanks for your help. Because we really want to head to the southside, we have decided to try Senegalese instead of Ethiopian. We're going to Yassa.

Well, Yassa is wonderful, so you should enjoy the experience, even though it's nothing like Ethiopian. If you haven't gone already, I'd like to recommend two beverages -- the ginger juice and the baobab juice. Ginger is jumping alive with blazing flavor and the baobab is rich and luxurious. The yassa chicken is great, but I'm sure the owner will happily guide you to a range of interesting slections. The owner and his wife (who is the chef) are most hospitable.

    Enjoy.
