I'm a long time lurker who finally decided to take the plunge and start posting when I realized that I needed some local help for a valentines dinner that I am planning. Yes -- I am fully aware that I am a user.

That being said, I have decided to go the completely "corny" route and make Mario Batali's Mint Love Letters -- provided I can get my hands on some "spicy lamb sausage." I have to admit that I am not familiar with this -- nor do I remember seeing it anywhere.

Is this something that I will need to go to a specialty store for and, if so, what would be an acceptable substitute?

    Thanks!

I'm looking at the exact recipe to which you refer, except in this version he calls it out as Merguez, specifically. Call to check, but I'm sure you could get it at Paulina Market, Fox & Obel, possibly Whole Foods... I doubt you'll find it at Dominick's or Jewel, but it really shouldn't be hard to locate.

I'd imagine you might find something like a merguez that should work very well at:

Incidentally, I imagine some other sausages would make for a tasty dinner, but I can't think of any substitute for Merguez, per se. It's pretty distinctive.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! After calling around a little bit it seems that Fox and Obel nor Whole Foods carry this particular sausage at the moment. Whole foods is willing to make some lamb sausage for me but I am not sure I will be able to achieve the desired result if I am not using a spicy sausage.

    More phone calls to make...

As JLenart suggested, Sahar Meat Market II is your best bet.
