Esquire's "The Best Sandwiches in America"

So Esquire magazine has an interesting list of what they consider the best sandwiches in America. First up on the list is the one that most intrigued me, "Jimmy's Favorite" at Jimmy and Drew’s 28th Street Deli in Boulder, CO:

Never mind that Jimmy and Drew left Chicago to sell meat in a vegan stronghold: They survive because they make everything in-house. They thrive because Jimmy’s namesake Reuben swaps pedestrian rye (meh, it’s just a meat vessel) for schmaltz-fried latkes the size of your hubcaps.

Now that's an interesting preparation and I'm thinking - and pardon this goy for possibly treading on toes - could this be the "Jewish jibarito"? Certainly this goes on my list of food destinations the next time I'm in the Boulder area.

The rest of the article has some other interesting hits but gives Chicago somewhat of a short shrift and goes for the predictable (Al's is the #1 I Beef - of course, it says so right on the sign).

They didn't go with either. I coined Jewbarito. If you go there and order one, they will probably stare blankly. I like Hebarito, too.

I like the way that "hebrewito" rolls off the tongue.

Here's a "Heebarito" from Corky & Lenny's, an excellent deli near Cleveland. They call it Beef & Latkas.



The first time I came across a similar sandwich was 25 years ago at Junior's in Brooklyn. Their "Something Different" is sliced brisket served between potato pancakes. I'm pleased to see it's still on the menu.

Not to take anything away from Corky & Lenny's, Jimmy & Drew's and the others but I think plain brisket works better than corned beef for this sort of sandwich.

D'oh, if you would have told me you were going. Mention my wife's Uncle Art's name there, and you would have been treated like royalty!

I've been to Corlky and Lenny's a few times this year. Great vibe, a hustle-bustle that just does not show up in Chicago's deli's, but I thought the food was so-so. Did you try Slymans? I couldn't. Uncle Art would not have it any other way.

Sure did! Slyman's corned beef is on Esquire's list. Here's a picture of their Reuben.



I'm not sure if Uncle Art would approve but I thought it was pretty good. I'll post a full report on Cleveland soon. A good city for corned beef (and other food too). While there, I had another Esquire-listed sandwich, the Polish Boy from Freddie's.

Another Megabus trip?

The place that I remember in Cleveland for corned beef was a place across from the Cuyahoga County Courthouse ... Karl's Inn of the Barrister. When you serve jury duty in Cleveland, you have to spend five WHOLE days at the Courthouse and this place was the best available.
