The Oscars are coming! The Oscars are coming!

We are having what may be the worst Oscar party to date. If the writer's strike continues, we will have John Stewart talking to himself and telling jokes to nobody á la Queen Latifah at the Peoples' Choice Awards. Creepy. And those insanely long speeches will be twice as dull watching them on home video-type format. So we have devised a plan, somewhat like the Rachel Ray drinking game (thank God for that). It is still in the early stages, but so far:

Since we bet on the winners of each category, with an official, printed, Oscar.com ballot, whoever guesses the wrong person to win must take a swig of booze.

A swig of booze after each winner thanks God.

A swig after any winner neglects to thank their spouse.

A swig after any celeb makes an ass of themselves (á la Halle Berry), tells a joke that tanks (Whoopi Goldberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Whoopi Goldberg) or gets shoved off the stage with either boos (Michael Moore) or speeches that last days requiring orchestral intervention (winners of those unimportant categories like art direction!)

But we need something to eat. And this is where the ultimate nerd in me comes out.

I like to have a little something to emulate each Best Picture nominee.

This year all I can think of is milkshakes for There Will Be Blood, maybe titled There Will Be Bloody Milkshakes. We also discussed having fried chicken and biscuits (yes, from Popeyes - unless someone has a better suggestion, please advise - I live in Niles just so you know) for no particular reason, so our Atonement item will be something healthy to atone for our sinful meal thus far.

Any other ideas? What did anybody eat in No Country for Old Men? We thought of boysenberry pie for Juno, but pie and milkshakes is a little too much. Then again, we'll be drunk, so maybe pie goes better with alcohol than milkshakes anyway.

    I appreciate your thoughts. 8)

Although this is the first year in eons I'm not having a party, I've always had theme food at past Oscar parties. I don't limit to the Best Picture nominations, either. If I were doing it this year, I'd probably serve:

-Some kind of stereotypical British food for 'Atonement'. Cucumber sandwiches, most likely. And Pimm's Cup to drink.

-Meat Pies or empanadas that I would still call The Worst Pies in London (Sweeney Todd)

    -Ratatouille

-Orange Tic Tacs for those who need them after. Lots and lots of Tic Tacs (Juno)

Not a great year for ideas.

Pie Lady, we also always did a bingo game (O-S-C-A-R) rather than a drinking game. Maybe you all could incorporate some drinking with some of our standard categories.

-Reaction shot of Jack Nicholson/extra drink if he's wearing sunglasses
-A winner tells their kids to go to bed
-Winner walks off the wrong way and has to be 'retrieved'
-Someone messes up their cue card reading
-Winner who has 'nothing prepared', but pulls out a list.

Another suggestion for Juno: Macaroni and cheese (as Bleeker was the "cheese to Juno's macaroni").

That's a better idea about adding different movies. Probably because of the empanadas.

    More:
Sip of booze when somebody announces that they "are so surprised/didn't expect to win!"
Sip when the winner re-names all the other nominees and mention they can't believe they won instead or were in the same category as the untouchable Helen Mirren, etc.

Also from Atonement: Godiva cocktails, for the brother's friend's chocolate syrup/rum drinks he describes by the pool. He also makes a batch and comes in the parlor announcing "I've got choc-tails!"

Wasn't there some other food mentioned? I seem to recall there was but now my memory fails.

That's pretty good - Although I saw Atonement some weeks ago, I don't remember any food or drink being featured or mentioned . . .

As an aside, where was the script editor? There's no way the term "choc-tails" was used in upper crust 1930s Britain.

Why not blood sausage or similar for "There Will Be Blood"
Serve drinks in paper cups for "Across the Universe" (Words are flowing out like endless rain into...)
    Bear Claws for Golden Compass
Hot Dogs for No Country for Old Men (yeah, gross)

    Russian food for Eastern Promises
    Afghani food for Kite Runner
    Persian food for Persepolis
French food for La Vie en Rose

Actually, if you wanted to get fancy, tournedos rossini feature prominently in La Vie en Rose. So does a pastrami sandwich, which Edith characterized as smelling like dog meat (or something like that).

For your Niles Area Fried Chicken, what about Chicken Inn on Milwaukee near Harlem? I know they are an officially certified Broasted Chicken outlet. I'd probably choose that over Popeye's, however I doubt they would have biscuits.

    Chicken Inn
    7536 N Milwaukee Ave

Edited to fix the name of the restaurant and add address info

    Hello,
This is my first time in the chat-group. I found some of your suggestions helpful, so I thought Id return the favor by sharing our Oscar menu. Oscar night is a big deal in our house, second only to X- mas. Traditionally, we have our guests try to guess which dish goes with which movie. The one who guesses the most gets a prize. The game focuses on the foods for best picture, but we have other foods to use as tie breakers. We serve the “Best Picture” food one at a time to allow focus on the food, while the other foods are laid out buffet style.

Here is this year’s menu. I hope it may be useful for someone else’s Oscar planning:

Atonement- Atone-mints- chocolate mints, because of the chocolate factory guy

Juno- buns in the oven, stork cakes, something with sunny D, (We are actually going to use your Mac & Cheese idea, now)

Michael Clayton - Italian bread served from a paper bag (Arthur hands Michael a loaf and tells him they’re good when they’re hot.) The bread will be served with w/ “My Cool” Clay-dip- some sort of thick dip (or spread) for the bread. (Yeah- dumb. I’m open for other suggestions.)

No Country for Old Men - really cold milk (glasses 1/2 full) In the movie, Chigurh takes the time to drink some milk from his intended victims fridge. When the sheriff notes that the bottle is still sweatin’ Wendell responds “Whoa, Sheriff! We just missed him! We gotta circulate this!” Ed replies “Well, okay. What do we circulate? Lookin' for a man who recently drunk milk?”

There will be Blood - Drainage shakes- Guests will be given a bunch of straws and the challenge to connect the straws in order to reach and drink another person’s shake. The first one done must say “I’m finished”

    Food ideas for other movies:
Sweeney Todd- “a little Priest” meat Pie

Norbit – ribs served with Norbit Albert Rice (his name) the ribs are mentioned a few times. when picking up Rasputia’s ribs from the rib shack he says ““please don’t trim that fat, she will kill me.” When they have a fight and he is running away from her she yells “Since you feel like running why don’t you run yourself down to the rib shake and get me a short stack…I’m famished” then he vents about her and ribs during his puppet show.

Pirates of the Caribbean- Calamari w/ Johnny Dip

Viggo Wieners for Eastern Promises due to the naked fight scene

The Golden Compass Bear claws (idea extracted from this thread)

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly- cookies shaped like bells and butterflies

Away From Her- forget-me-not cake (cake with Forget-me-not flowers for decor) –Christie is institutionalized with Alzheimer's, forgets her husband and falls in love with another patient.

Gone Baby Gone- - Cheese Jean-Baptiste & Crackers There is a scene where they keep repeating the name Cheese" Jean Baptiste, it ends with detective Remy saying
“He's a violent sociopathic Haitain criminal named Cheese. Either you know him or you don't.” In the following scene Cheese says “B- ches love the cheddar”

I appreciate any suggestions for any other movie, especially if anyone has ideas for fitting in a veggie platter.

Yes, I can use veggie tales next year.
I added Swedish fish to the menu for serfs up and it is still a record breaking year for foods. We had 14 movie related food items on the menu and I don’t think we have ever been able to come up with more than 10 dishes for any of the previous years. We also added typical movie food like popcorn & nachos.
Thanks again for the Juno Mac & Cheese idea and the Golden compass Bear Claws. I actually had a difficult time finding bear claws and had to special order them from the supermarket bakery. Who knew?
I hope your parties go well.

All right, it's time for the 2009 Oscar Fest. So far this year:

Veggies with dip (Veggie Tales: The Pirates that Don't Do Anything)
Ham & cheese mini sandwiches(The Happening)
Noodle soup with pork or a porky appetizer on the side (Kung-Fu Panda; The Pig)
    Possibly kangaroo sausages (Austrailia)

Something Indian (Rachel Getting Married, Slumdog Millionaire)
Something Middle Eastern (Persepolis (and why the hell wasn't this nominated??), Traitor)

Roasted pineapple or pineapple dessert of some sort (Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder
Cookies that look like buttons (Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
    Milk

Other ideas, anybody? What are you making?
