Scylla Restaurant will be opening in the old Glory space, at 1952 North Damen, early next year.

Thanks Erik. I, for one, miss Glory. I really enjoyed walking in early on a weeknight and having a cup o' clam chowder, lobster roll, and a beer. They also made a helluva yankee pot roast.

I am glad that the new tenant is a restaurant and not a sports bar (which I half-expected). I am doubly pleased that they are seafood-focused.

I found Glory to be enjoyable enough. Like you--I think--I kept my expectations in check, and managed to find the simple pleasures to be had at Glory.

I copied Scylla's web address from the window, today, while driving past. Otherwise, I know nothing of the place except for what I was able to gather from the menus. It looks interesting.

Right, and they use Whirlpool appliances, I assume.

    Oy.

I apologize if this has been covered before, but what happened to Glory? I never went there, but sort of intended to at some point if all the stars were aligned properly. But since that never happened all I have to go on is reviews and Glory seemed like the kind of the place would make it--at least for longer than it did. I remember it getting good press and the location seemed suited for what it was attempting.

I can't say for sure, and my only information is anecdotal, but I just think it was a simple case of not enough customers to pay the rent (which I imagine was high).

I went to Glory reasonably often, sometimes on weekend evenings and I never once encountered the place even half-full. (Once, at brunch, it was reasonably full). I always looked in when passing by, and again, rarely ever half-full.

I recommended Glory to many of my friends who are less adventureous diners, and I was surprised to receive mostly mediocre to negative reviews in return. I just don't think they were interesting or good enough to be a destination, and they just didn't click with the neighborhood. Just my guess.

That location (north Bucktown/South Roscoe Village/Center Overpassville) is absolutely cursed for restaurants. Nice old building, though. I wonder how the nearby Babaluci stays open. Le Bouchon has its very loyal followers; like Kiki's, in what used to be a really odd 'hood for that kind of place, the fans will go wherever it is. Remeber the short-lived Chilean empanada place? I think Meritage survives because it's pretty darn good and the patio is spectacular. But I bet the same place would have been a much bigger deal elsewhere. Also nearby, I noticed Watusi finally closed. That's a place that lasted much longer in a poor location, with little good pub or word-of-mouth, than I would have expected.

I was among those who thought Glory wasn't great. I was disappointed because I thought it was a very solid idea with an interesting menu. Also the closest thing we had to Portuguese food.

I went to Glory for brunch...I'd heard about their lobster rolls in the Tribune and the line for Toast was ridiculously long so 2 friends and I went to Glory instead. The place was cute, but the service was terrible -- our waiter was rude and the food wasn't good. I got some sort of egg dish that was incredibly salty and the coffee didn't taste good at all. I love that area on Damen and hope they can find some new good restaurants for the area.
Did anyone hear about some sort of Chocolate place opening up in Wicker Park? I think I saw a posting about them hiring in the Reader.

I live down the street and walked by Glory a million times pondering whether to go in or not - and never did. Hopefully Scylla will convince me - the menu sure looks good!

Hot Chocolate is opening a couple blocks south. It is run by the former pastry chef at MK (which seems to be known for their desserts).

I ran into Mindy Segal at an LTH outing in Chinatown a couple of months ago. She said that the place will not necessarily be just a desert venue. She was planning a full menu...including desert, of course. I'm looking forward to the opening.
