I'm writing a magazine article on chili. I am to provide some history on the dish and interview chefs around the Southwest to talk about their individual takes on chili. Since I'm planning to visit my sister in Dallas next month, I thought I would parlay the visit into a Chili Road Trip.

Can anyone recommend good chili places in and around Dallas? I can write about all sorts of restaurants, from hole-in-the-wall lunch counters and street vendors to sit-down diners or whatever. If the chili's good, I'd like to know about the place.

And, while we're at it, if you know of outstanding chili places anywhere else in the Southwest, I'd appreciate knowing about them so I can call them for the article.

    Thanks, everybody.

I would recommend purchasing the book in the link below. If you want the real history of chili and the story of the "chili queens" that made this dish so popular today then this book is where it starts and ends as far as information.

I suggest reading Tolbert's A Bowl of Red. When I think of chili, I don't think of Dallas(not that it's unavailable in that part of Texas). Chili puts me more in mind of West Texas, The Hill Country, the border in general. South of Dallas, anyway. Closer to your destination, maybe you could dig up something in Fort Worth? Thing is...like a lot of Texans...when I have a hankerin' for a "bowl of red" I just make a batch. I'm sure there are places that specialize...and probably famous venues at that, but I can't think of one.
