NIU Cookies

I work at NIU, and I wanted to let you know that we have been having a difficult time, but we will get through. I was there when students from that classroom started running in, some of them wounded. At some point some very wise person brought out a huge box of valentine sugar cookies and started passing them out. You just never know how much food can be a comfort to people. I pray that none of you ever have to be in that situation, but I wanted to let you know, there is nothing like sharing some love, care and concern through food.

I attended NIU and actually worked in the photo lab in the basement of Cole Hall, and had a class in one of the auditoriums there (don't remember which one, but there's only 2.) This was 8 years ago, but I was a little extra shaken by this incident, and I'm glad some simple cookies helped people get through it.

I also attended NIU and worked in the student union, flipping burgers, in the mid-70's. I was very upset and stunned to hear what happened. I only hope the students, faculty and staff can heal from this very ugly incident.

Cookies can work magic. My thoughts are with the NIU community.

Grant, keep in mind, it wasn't just the cookie that gave comfort. The comfort also came from the connection between the hand that extended it and the hand that took it. I've spent my life's career at NIU serving students. It delights me that we have some NIU Alums here. Once a Husky, always a Husky.

My thoughts have very much been with the NIU community.
My daughter is a freshman at N Michigan U in Marquette, and NIU was actually her 2nd choice. She has been very rattled this week, feeling like she could have been there, as have I, feeling like it could have been my baby in that class. My heart cries for the parents and students. There is so much insanity in the world- I pray that all the students and parents will know how much they are supported by love and caring of the community here in Illinois- I know it can't bring back the innocence, but maybe it can bring them a teeny bit of hope and faith.

A friend who now lives in California, lectured in that very classroom at NIU in 2001 and 2002 so this tragedy rings close to home. Razbry, I know where you are coming from, I worked 10 years for a college and it's the small things like cookies and MM's that bring comfort to the students. I saw in my local paper today that volunteers were assembling goodie bags that included 44,000 cookies donated from various sources and are to be given to the students. Razbry, your heart is definately in the right place, it's the little things and the kind thoughts that will help get everyone moving forward and through this.

Just thought it might interest some of you that the DeKalb/Sycamore area residents and businesses donated 55,000 cookies and packaged them up for returning NIU students.

Not me.
Sometimes the simple things help bring back some normalcy. They don't call it comfort food for nothing. I hope things are getting a little easier to handle at NIU.
