Memphis In May BBQ

I am booking my first trip to the MIM BBQ Fest, any sugestions or experinces would be greatly appreciated . I have driven through Memphis on the way to New Orleans from Chicago a few times but have never made it anywhere but the fabulous Interstate BBQ.

One thing to keep in mind about MIM. The teams are working, and while it might seem like a huge party going on (and it often is) these parties are not exactly open to the public. If you know someone, or even know someone who knows someone, you can easily hook up with a team and their party. If you don't know someone then you can easily get invited into a team's area by simply talking to them. As you likely know BBQ people love to talk BBQ.

If this is your first trip to Memphis I highly reccomend a tour of Sun Studio and of course Graceland.

Exactly. There are no restaurant licenses or sanitation checks, so nobody can officially offer you food; you have to talk your way around and in. See if you can find Willy from Honky Tonk Barbecue and identify yourself as an LTHer.

There is another way: volunteer. They need lots of volunteers. If you make yourself useful, then it goes a long way to getting what you want.

i wrote somewhere in another thread (perhaps the ribs thread) of my experience at MIM BBQ Fest ...

it's a blast, but i was with my sisters who both went to school there and can't walk 10 feet without running into someone..... so without that i'm not sure if it would've been that fun.... of course the real fun for many are the festivals held in the private tents... you pretty much have to talk your way into them and once you're in you're pretty good... i think the many people could find at least some group they could find something in common with and try to weasal the way in... pretend you're a firefighter or something.. there are some where it'll just be so crazy the people won't really know what's going on let alone who is who...

they do also have a few trailers set up by a few food places where they sell you the food.... but these aren't even the good places (if i remember?) necessarily, just people who happen to have carnie trailers
