Alas... my reason for joining Costco - USDA Choice tri-tips - is no longer valid. For a full year, I have exchanged knowing smiles with the butcher as I picked out my tri-tip roasts and brought them home to eat. But, apparently, I was one of only a few doing so. They decided they weren't moving enough cartons/week to justify the cooler space, so they have nixed them. Drat!

Where am I to get tri-tips in the Western Burbs now?

Trader Joe's generally carries tri-tip roasts in their meat section.

I'd be surprised if Casey's in Western Springs didn't have them - they could cretainly get them for you if they don't carry them regularly.

Will be more costly that Costco, though.

Talk to Frank in the meat dept at Westbrook Market, at 63rd and Cass in Westmont. I have gotten tri-tips, properly-cut flatiron steaks, and even hangers...

The "Lincoln Park" CostCo still has them. Have a 14lb cryo-pack of them in my fridge to prove it! Maybe plan a special trip and stock up?

Thanks for the tip-tips, everyone. I should have said near-west (Oak Parky) burbs, but all these are great possibilities. I have seen tri-tips at Trader Joes, but always in a marinade, do the ever have them plain?

My advise, start a purchasing relationship with a quality butcher shop, and you will probably never buy meat at Costco again. My local butcher typically has any cut of meat I am looking for, and will order ones he does not typically carry.

I've been in Oak Park for a year of so myself. Is there actually a quality butcher here? I certainly know some in the city, but have yet to find one that is close.

I have a great local butcher, but their prices are often as high as 70% more than similar cuts at Costco. I'm all for helping out the little guy, but if I buy my meat at Costco long enough, I could OWN the local butcher some day.

Mt. Prospect Costco had 4 roasts and plenty of the steaks today. It took me only 25 minutes to get to the Buzz Cafe in Oak Park, from this area yesterday, so you might want to check it out.

They definitely did last summer. Because of the long fridge life of the cryo, I would buy a few and just keep them on hand.

    West-side tri-tip lovers:

As of last weekend, the Oak Brook Costco is again carrying tri-tips. Butcher said the decision to drop them was a mistake. Happy cooking!

    Hi,

I was looking for tri-tip at the Costco in LP, however, I didn't find any. Are they still not available at Costco, or just in select locations? What about the Niles location? Or any other stores besides Costco -- stores in the city.
    Thanks,
    Joel

Treasure Island on Broadway has carried them for almost all of the six years I have lived in the neighborhood.

I bought a large (13-14 lbs) cryo vac package of tri tips at the Orland Park Costco about three weks ago.
