OT's and Filbert's

Had today off and after my errand running figured I'd run down to Filbert's to grab a case of Black Cherry soda. Have fallen in love with the stuff since I drink it every breakfast at Leo's Lunchroom so decided to go get some for home as well. Grabbed a case of Black Cherry and a mixed case where basically I told the guy filling it "Um... 2 of those, 3 of these. Sure I'll try those. What else do ya have open around here?". Ended up with Ginger Ale, Root Beer, Mr. Newport, Cream Soda, Grape, Orange, Peach, Lime, Pineapple, and maybe that was it. Left a handful untried because I didn't notice them. So far had an Orange which was great. The smell from the tiny factory is worth the trip and of course $8 cases of bottles of soda is great too Attempted to tip the guy that helped me a few bucks which he refused.

Tried to think of a place to grab lunch on my wandering journey home and was headed to Honey One BBQ since I hadn't been in a while but opted for OT's which was on my way there and where I have never been.
Got the fried chicken special, with 2 sides and a corn cake (griddled when I ordered like a pancake). I took it to go and was not too impressed. Mac and cheese was good, greens were not bad (wanted mashed potatoes but they were out at the time), and the chicken was average. Think it suffered from sitting out a bit too long and the journey home didn't help any. Ordered a breast and drumstick but somehow got a thigh and 3 wings. Crust had a nice flavor but was simply a bit too worn, and was more chewy than crisp. Wings were dried out rubbery.
Oh well, can't win them all. Sure it would have been better had it been fresh.

Mr Newport is Filbert's lemon-lime drink. I always wondered why it was called that and now (thanks to Google) I think I know.

The Newport Mineral Water Co opened in 1912 in northern Kentucky (a predecessor dates back to 1887). In the early 1950s, responding to the increasing popularity of national brands such as 7-Up, they introduced Mr Newport in then-large 12 ounce bottles (people didn't always consume soft drinks by the liter or multiples thereof). By 1955 they were out of business and Filbert's somehow acquired the brand name. Next time I'm there I'll try to remember to ask Ron Filbert if he knows more of the story.

These tiny independent bottlers like Filbert's are a vanishing breed. Enjoy them while you can. And thanks, Jamieson, for the report.

Your chicken order at OT's was a common problem for them before they became so popular about a year ago. I always thought that maybe they didn't have breast because it cost more back in the days when they were undiscovered.


The secret to ordering at OT's is to wait for fresh chicken. It makes all the difference in the world. I finds the mac and cheese pretty good there and the pintos absolutely wonderful.
