It appears that Nazarlik, at 1650 W. Belmont, has closed. The phone has been disconnected, and last night when we went to check it out the place was dead as a doornail. Hmmm, that is kind of strange. He has quite a wholesale trade with a warehouse and/or office in Northbrook. According to someone who knew the situation better than I, this guy supplied all of the Thai restaurants in the Chicago area and beyond. He extended credit to all of them at various times, which made them quite loyal to him. I wonder if he is simply getting out of retail and concentrating on the wholesale.

This is awful!

I went to the soft opening of Twisted Sister Bakery last Saturday (1543 N Wells) -- full disclosure: the wife of one of the attorneys in my office is partner to the venture -- the classics (lemon squares, red velvet cupcakes, brownies &c.) done to a virtuoso turn. Official opening last night (March 26)

A friend at the Andersonville Chamber just sent me a link to the website for Big Jones, soon to be opening at the former Augie's spot.

Also, does anyone know what's going in at the Delray Farms location at Broadway and Foster?

The Scoops sign has been at one place or another on the site since last summer. Moving the sign to the fence and demolition of the former Toots building have just made it more obvious. Based on this track record, I wouldn't hold my breath.

They are planning on opening the middle of next week (around 4-2-08. I've had samples of the food and it's great. It's a Kosher Israeli cuisine restaurant. The menu is meat based so you won't find any dairy products.

So far as I am aware, they haven't even broken ground. I haven't seen any signs of construction anywhere along Milwaukee. The TimeOut article lists 333 S Milwaukee, which is just north of Bob Chinn's.

The place on Lincoln just north of Diversey that used to be Calliope, a nice sandwich shop, is now going to be The Parmegian, An Italian Restaurant.

Unpromising is the vibe I get. But who knows.

Also, on Ashland within a couple of blocks north or south of Montrose (didn't catch the exact cross street), a place soon opening called Mextico Grill. I never saw that word before, but a quick googling reveals that Mextico is a region at the southern end of the Baja Peninsula.

Two new sightings on Broadway in Edgewater. Well, Green Village is not so new, I guess. It's located in the former Paradise space and they offer Middle Eastern favorites and Ethiopian dishes. Also spotted on Broadway around 5700 or 5800 North is a new Somalian restaurant though I am blanking on the name right now.

Unfortunately, I can't promise Hong Min's resurrection, since 'tis now April 2. But if they ever do re-open, I'll be right there with you.

For a couple of years now, the former Rushmore space has looked pretty much the same, right down to the bottles behind the bar and one light on even though it had long since closed. The last time I went by it, though, I noticed paper covering the windows...does anybody have the scoop on what's going on?

According to a reliable source the owner sold the building to Ba Le and is getting out of the business entirely.

I, for one, will miss Thai Grocery.

Unfortunately, I found this out too late for April 1, but The Balanced Kitchen, which has been open since December, according to their website, is "The best gluten-free, vegan, sustainable, eco-friendly, high-tech, artisan, local seasonal food restaurant in Chicago."

If this is a joke, they went awfully far with it...but near as I can figure, isn't that the address for Home Depot?

In Chicago odd numbering is East side of the street, Home Depot is on the West side of McCormik. I imagine it's in the strip with Hong Kong Buffet and Little Quiapo.

The more descriptors you put in front of the word "restaurant," the more accurate "best" is - without actually making a statement about the quality of the food...

Driving up Ashland yesterday, I noticed an attractive new awning advertising "Mixteco Grill". Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of the cross-street (maybe Wilson?). Anybody know anything about it? Judging by the name and the fancy awning alone, I might guess upscale Oaxacan?

So you did, but we spelled the name differently (which is why it didn't show up in a search). I will have to drive by there again to verify the name (I have been known to be lysdexic on occasion ).

Just back from grocery shopping and we passed a storefront on Broadway with a "Fine Somalian Dining" sign posted. The name of the place is Laa Mushkila. For those of you who know the northern stretches of Broadway, it's two storefronts north of Indie Cafe. Since we were in the car, we couldn't tell for certain whether it's open yet and we know nothing about the menu. Looking forward to hearing positive results. We're ALWAYS looking for positive results for new places that are close to home!
