If it is sitting with your brother at the bar at Tuman's with High-Life longnecks that you subsequently smash against each other's head, beautiful.

I don't know about now, but in the heyday of Tuman's the OP probably could have done that three years ago. :)

I miss the ol' Alcohol Abuse Center.

That said, I think a 21st birthday is less about what you have, but who you're with. My first drink was a bottle of Budweiser at the Lantern in Naperville, but my friends were there. I'm sure I could think of a better way to christen my new freedom, but the company was good.

Wow...memory lane. I honestly don't recall what I drank on my 21st birthday -- probably several pitchers of Long Island Iced Teas at Kilroy's in Bloomington (although to be honest with you I'd drunk those long before my legal birthday :D )

I do recall what I drank on my 18th birthday when my father decided that he needed to take the family to Wisconsin so I could drink legally for the first time. yes folks...this dates me. But...I had 2 very weak strawberry daquiris and a glass of french white wine, the bottle of which I saved for many years. I think the house was Portager.

There was also the very long banquet in Shanghai when I was in a choir that performed throughout Asia on an official state visit to China and we had about a zillion toasts with visiting officials and I got blitzed on plum wine and something clear and potent. That was a fun night.

But I was not, alas, of legal age.

I would recommend the Matchbox, personally. I get the whole scenic view thing of the Signature Room -- and I do love Chicago -- but the Matchbox is just such a great joint -- and they do make fantastic cocktails-- The Matchbox does make the finest margarita I've ever had.

Maybe it's more about what kind of a drinker you're going to be. Or maybe I just like the low lives...

I think your 21st would best be spent with a bottle of Jeppson's Malort. Best to just get that one out of the way :)

Even historically, most gentlemen employed a groom or blacksmith to shoe horses, but tying a bowtie remains an essential skill unless one never attends formal parties.

By the time I was 21 I couldn't stand cheap alcohol and the hangovers they produce so I was drinkn grey goose on my 21st. How about a few jager bombs?, they seem to be the perfect pairing for a 21st.

To continue the provocative side discussion-
I won't clip and light a cigar, but I can clip a bowtie on a tux, which is the only way I've ever done it. I'd venture to say most guys on this earth don't like Scotch-highland, lowland, peaty, or Cutty.
(Although, most behavior I see by guys being true guys involves: artfully spitting out large wads of goo; screaming at top volume during televised sports events as if they owned a % of the hometeam; marinating butt steaks in lighter fluid. )

    HI,

Water. Soda pop. Juice. Milk shake. Milk. Chocolate Milk.

I know I am spitting against the wind.

Perhaps you'd enjoy a frosty bottle of Kayo. Sluggo likes it.

My first legal drink was Jack Daniels. Still my standby if I can't find anything else worth drinking :) The rest of the night was Killian's, Cuervo, Cherry Bombs....

I'm going to assume since you hang out here you are a good citizen, full of charm and good natured. I'm going to assume you haven't drank illegally  I'm guessing you have better taste than I had at that time.

You only turn 21 once. Make it a good memory. Have fun. Hang out with your brother.

    Martinis don't come in flavors.

Scotch tastes like poo if you've never had it before - but what a better time to learn.

Tell the bartender you've just turned 21 and you're celebrating with your brother - they'll likely buy you a drink. If you're drinking good stuff and tipping well - it'll be something good. If you're drinking Bud - they'll buy you Bud.

    I can't tie a bowtie.

Funny you should post that because Dave Attell once did a show in Madison and when I went into Angelic one night there he was doing shots with some young females. I loved "Insomniac" it was kind of like "no reservations" for drinkee's.

During my college day's, which weren't all that long ago, depending on what I felt like that night...I drank jager bomb's, Patron or Jamison shots chased with spotted cow or whatever local micro was on tap at the bar. I guess I was kind of spoiled living in Wisconsin with its great micro breweries...I never drank bud/bud light/miller lite/MB/PBR or any of that crap...I was done with it after HS. I will to this day drink bottles of high life which I like for some reason.

As for where to go on your 21st--why not see if the Cub's have a home game that day...unless your a sox fan.

In the same vein, you can always have Fred Sandford's drink of choice. He takes Champagne and mixes it with Ripple. He calls it Champipple.

For my own 21st (and 30th): Beer. The best thing was that on both I didn't tell my friends the significance of the date until late into the night. Standing around playing pool on my 30th, having a beer and otherwise just hanging out was a great way to send the night. It was an interesting way to enjoy a night without too much stupidity. "By the way guys, I turned 30 today, so the next round's on me" was a great way to celebrate.

For my kids (twins born last year), I hope to stock up on some great Bordeaux to celebrate their 21st with family, but in some ways I hope they both celebrate the night itself out with friends, hopefully in a relaxed atmosphere. Downing multiple shots is a bad idea. Having a few beers with buddies? That's the way to do it.

    GREEN CHARTREUSE

I love Chartreuse and in fact would have loved to have had this flaming Chartreuse and absinthe cocktail, Neptune's Wrath, at The Violet Hour for my 21st.

I was on a train by myself from Wolverhampton, England, to Izola, Slovenia on my 21st birthday. I celebrated it with a fifth of Famous Grouse whiskey and two bottles of some random Cab, shared amongst my fellow cabin-mates (a couple of French girls and an Italian guy.) In the middle of the night, I got fined 10,000 lira for propping my feet up against the seats across from me. However, I did end up winning $200 earlier on the slot machines on the ferry from Dover to Calais, then won another $40 while explaining to American tourists how the slot machine games worked, so I wasn't too ticked off.

Because of that memory, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Famous Grouse.

This is sounding vaguely familiar; I spent my 21st birthday in my dorm in Leningrad, pouring shots for anyone who knocked on my door from a hideous bottle of off-brand coffee liqueur someone bought me from the hard currency store. I was very popular that evening, probably mostly because my Soviet dorm-mates were very amused at the whole spectacle. And I wasn't even drunk.
