We're catering an event coming up with a celestial theme. They're providing their own liquor, but want ideas for a specialty cocktail that fits in with the theme. The event will be attended by all women (probably 40 and older) so I think something fairly approachable, but fun, is in order.

    Any ideas?

(The only thing I could think of that reminds me of stars is Goldschlager and the last time I drank that we lit it on fire in our dorm room so I don't think of it as approachable.)

What about a combination of Champagne ("I am drinking stars!" - Dom Perignon) with the Goldschlager? I'd be curious to see how the gold flakes interact with the bubbles.

Since the ancient Egyptians identified the Orion constellation in the sky as Sah the "soul of Osiris", the identification of this section of the myth seems relatively complete. Hera wears, not a wreath nor a tiara nor a diadem, but clearly the calyx of the pomegranate that has become her serrated crown.[32] In some artistic depictions, the pomegranate is found in the hand of Mary, mother of Jesus.---Wikipedia

    How about a sparkling wine

    dollop of pomegranate syrup

smidge of Trader Joe's sparkling pomegranate

    and some pomegranate seeds

...as evidenced in another thread, I'm all about the sparkling wine and various accoutrement

A few years ago, I made a prosecco/pomegranate cocktail that was quite a hit. The color of the cocktail was pleasing to th eye and the effervescence caused the pomegranate seeds to float nicely in the drink.

    Here is the recipe:

1/2 cup fresh pomegranate juice (from about two 11-ounce pomegranates)
    1/4 cup sugar
    1 teaspoon orange-flower water*
    2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds

    2 750-ml bottles chilled Prosecco

Bring juice and sugar to boil in medium saucepan over high heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Boil 1 minute. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until mixture thickens and reduces to 1/4 cup, about 5 minutes longer. Remove from heat and stir in orange-flower water. Refrigerate syrup until cold, about 1 hour. (Syrup can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated.)
Place pomegranate seeds in plastic bag and freeze 1 hour.

Pour 1 1/2 teaspoons syrup into each of eight 8-ounce Champagne flutes. Fill flutes with Prosecco; stir gently. Float a few frozen seeds in each glass and serve.

I think the pomegranate reference may be a little obtuse to relate to guests as your passing cocktails, but I do like the idea of doing a champagne cocktail. Any other great ideas?

Maybe the champagne cocktail could be served in the old style cup shaped champagne glasses, and a thin slice of carambola(star fruit) could be floating in it.

Anything containing blue curacao, perhaps a blue angel (here's a simpler version). I like the idea of the starfruit garnish.

OK, this is dorky, but what about a take on the Lava Lamp Drink (I like LAZ's blue curacao idea as a base, and the starfruit garnish as well) I don't know that I'd use Craisins, but you could riff on this idea: e.g. a while back, there was a kid's drink that had little globules of jello in it that you might be able to copy. Tapioca pearls (which I'd seen dried at the now-closed Grand Mart in pastel colors) or the aforementioned pomegranate pips might also bob up and down in sparkling wine; you'd have to experiment with densities...

When you do come up with a drink, do you mind posting your recipe and pictures? I'm curious...

There's a cocktail that my wife used to enjoy at the old Star Bar called a Celestial Fizz. They still serve it at Pops for Champagne.

    Here's a recipe I found online:
    http://recipes.bartender.com/champagne/c1-CELESTIAL-FIZZ.htm

I believe this is very similar to the version they make at Pops.

I can't vouch for the taste of any of these, but they all seem to fit the thematic bill (from The Webtender):

    Milky Way Martini
    2 oz Vanilla vodka
    2 oz Chocolate liqueur
    1 oz Irish cream

Combine all ingredients, mix, serve without ice.

    Milky Way
    1 oz dry Gin
    1 oz Amaretto di saronno
    1/3 oz Strawberry liqueur
    1/2 oz Strawberry syrup
Fill up 3 collins glasses with fresh Pineapple juice

Shake. Garnish with cut apple, lemon, pineapple-leaves.

    The Milky Way (version 2)
    1 1/2 oz Bailey's irish cream
    1 oz Root beer schnapps
    1/2 oz Goldschlager

Pour the root beer schnapps first in the shot glass then add the irish cream and then the Goldschlager on top.

They also have recipes for a Black Hole, Star Dust, and Starburst.

Amen - it's been off the market, so we can't be alone - but I'm not opposed to the idea of champagne with eyedropper-drop-sized blobs of homemade fruit juice gelatin - at least in theory (though, again, I willingly cop to this idea being too dorky)

Given some thought, I could do you a list of liqueurs with planetary affinities (venus -- libra, taurus -- rules apples eg calvados) so on thru the solar system and zodiac -- jupiter/juniper = gin &c -- neptune in general rules alcohol and other mind melters -- and maybe devise a generic Fly Me to the Moon cocktail

if you think this will float the boat of your clientele (40+ women tend to find astrology amusing) pm me

Unfortunately we did not cater the event (you win some, you lose some) so I don't have any photos or recipes to share. Thanks for all of the great suggestions and I'll keep them in mind if I ever have a need.

    Cheers!
