Hello Everyone. I am new to the LTH Forum, but I've been lurking for quite a while. Your comments and suggestions have been very helpful. Who in Chicagoland serves a good Chicken Fried steak? I know that it ain't gourmet, but I'm form the south (enough said). Rock Bottom used to sell a pretty decent CFS but took it off of the menu. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Cnwill,

Best I've had in the area is Chuck's Southern Comforts Cafe, an LTHForum GNR winner.

Dixie Kitchen in Hyde Park ( http://www.dixiekitchenchicago.com/ ) - 5225 S. Harper. I suggest fried green tomatoes as a starter, red beans and rice and mashed potatoes as your sides, and a Georgia Peach Colada as your beverage.

The pic above is above is probably all that you need to know.

However, for the sake of the thread, Wishbone serves up CFS as well.

CFS is only offered at Wishbone (at least the Washington Blvd. location; I can't speak for the Lincoln location) on Friday only. It's a good version, but the steak itself is much thinner than a "normal" CFS. When my office was across the street, I made semi-regular visits on Fridays for a CFS, Mac-N-Cheese and Waldorf Salad lunch.

    Good to know!

Now that I think about it, all the times I've been to Wishbone (only a handful) must have all been on friday, coincidentally! Strangely fortuitous, I suppose.

Chuck's chicken fried steak is as delicious as it is photogenic.

He also makes a mean chicken fried chicken, if you are dining with someone who doesn't care for chicken fried steak!

Wishbone is now in Berwyn / Oak Park as well:

I don't see CFS on the current dinner menu, but I had it for weekend brunch in February.

The CFS at the Berwyn Wishbone barely deserves to be called either chicken fried or steak. Served cold with the breading falling off. It has been a couple of months since I tried it and I don't remember the details but there was nothing pleasant about the dish.

I didn't say anything about it being good.

My vote is still for Dixie Kitchen.

There's always Popeye's that has been pushing Chicken Fried Steak on it's menu for over a year now. I ordered it once early in it's introduction, and while it wasn't terribly bad, it wasn't terribly good. I haven't ordered it again, but still might.

I had one that was recommended pretty highly by the server at heaven on seven. It wasn't as good as some of
the dishes there can be, but pretty solid. The picture of the chuck's cfs looks pretty dynamite though.

Yet another place to get CFS is GNR Winner White Palace

Pictured here is the breakfast version, which is served with hash browns and two eggs. A more traditional dinner version, with mashed potatoes and overcooked diner-style green beans is also available for the same price.

Some repeats of the above recommendations, and more thoughts on CFS can be found on the thread ISO fantastic chicken fried steak w/ perfect gravy.

Also...maybe someone else can answer this: Does the Depot American Diner have CFS?
