Laury's Bakery in Oak Park offering a bit of the South

Sometimes a visitor can look around your home turf with fresh eyes. A few weeks ago, I stopped by Laury's Bakery to pick-up some items for breakfast. When I saw the variety of cakes displayed I immediately recognized they offered quite a bit of Southern dessert specialities: sweet potato pie, pineapple upside down cake and slices, red velvet cake, caramel cake, banana pudding, peach cobbler and pound cake.





Peach cobbler that was two crisp layers with peach filling in the middle:

Caramel Cake was the only one where some had the reaction it was a cake mix:


My friend who lives nearby had stopped going when the bakery changed ownership a few years ago. He didn't realize there was now a Southern direction to the offerings. Laury's Bakery is over 100 years old according to the counter people we talked to. While the counter people were black, another friend was certain it was a Korean owned bakery. Whatever it may be, the offerings are certainly Southern influenced.

The Red Velvet cake at Laury's is de-lectable; we've had a few birthday cakes from there (four blocks from my place), but I never think to post about bakeries. The Turano bakery store is another good one:

Wonderful chocolate chip cookies and cream puffs in addition to all manner of crusty Italian loaves and a few seasonal specialties (Irish quickbreads, hot cross buns).

As long as you're infiltrating Madison Street, did you see or try Sheena's Soul Food Deli (108 Madison) a few doors down? Metromix has this to say:

The no-frills facade and dining room aren't much for eye candy, but the real draw here is the made-from-scratch soul food. Breakfast includes choices like biscuits and gravy and salmon croquettes, plus American favorites like pancakes. The soulful lunch specials change daily, but look for choices like fried chicken, catfish, turkey wings and Cornish hen with turnip and mustard greens. The deli portion of the menu is dedicated to sandwiches (corned beef, roast beef), sub sandwiches (six or twelve inches) and salads. Save room for dessert; Sheena's serves up goodies like peach cobbler and pie. Everything is made to order; call ahead for carry out if you're in a hurry.

This is even closer to home for me, and I have sadly never tried it. Maybe a project for next week.

The congratulations are apt, but I believe the actual post #10,000 was here. I'm guessing the one you're referencing was c2's #9,999.

I went to Laury's to get a birthday cake for The Wife maybe 15 years ago; we didn't like it much and I never went back. My guess is that the place has changed hands (probably more than once) since then because these offerings look way different than the what I remember. Good find, C2.
