We are going to be having dinner in the Milwaukee Ave/Irving Pk. Rd. area and need a nice place for coffee and/or dessert after. Any suggestions?

Lutz Cafe & Pastry Shop at 2458 W. Montrose is always a good bet. They have been closed recently for remodelling, so call ahead. 773.478.7785

They were never a good option for late-night.

    I stand corrected. I guess.

I'd really like to hear the answer to this one. I think this thread points to a big hole in the local dining scene. After about 10pm the pickins' get mighty slim. A few 24hr diners, the "golden's", nothing really good. I like Lutz's but they were never open late.

The whole situation has actually gotten alot worse over the years. Old standbys like the Oak Tree are no more (never that great but better than Golden Apple/Nugget for sure),even the Belden deli is gone. It's been a problem for me more than once. I usually just wind up at Seven Treasures for a bowl of noodles if a slice of pie at white Palace or Hollywood Grill won't do the job. It's really discouraging.

I'm going to do some more thinking and research on this one (I'm the resident night-owl), but something that immediately came to mind was Bluebird, on 1749 N. Damen. Here are their hours from the website:

    Kitchen: Sun-Mon 11pm, Wed 12am, Thurs-Sat 1am

I've caught them serving dessert (along with lambics, which is about all you need) even later than that; they're open until 2 AM most nights.

I am also a wee-hours frequenter of Seven Treasures, Golden Nugget, White Palace (when I absolutely have to), La Pasadita, San Soo Gap San, and Baba Palace ( http://www.babapalace.com/home.html).

This isn't in the area that the OP requested but tonight I was at Fox and Obel and noticed that they are now open from 6am to midnight every day. I also noticed that they took all the starters, including their delicious version of a hummus plate, off the cafe menu.
